Bring it to a dealer and confirm if it;s corrosion and determine if it's a P or an S mint > Do not send it off to any grading company they really might send it back to you unslabbed. Let the dealer decide for you he will know in hand examination Good luck with it JC .
Joe Why do you always have to be so negative about everything??? The guy found a nice piece, he's being a good friend to another person and doing his research as far as what it is worth (bravo by the way!). and you cant do anything but trash the coin from the get go. It might not be your kind of coin, but no need to trash the ever living heck out of it just because YOU don't like it. It's not my ideal 1928 silver dollar either but I do respect Sholom enough not to trash the coin he's trying to get some information about. I like the coin, I agree with Mark F. as far as pricing goes. I just think that If you cant say anything nice don't say anything at all.
What trashing the coin I;m trying to give my honest assement of the coin so who are you to tell me about being negative you make no sense as useually that;s. my opinoin of the condition of this coin It has nothing to do with me liking the coin. We don't like each other and that's fine with me Why send the coin off to a grading company first ,he;s better off bringing it to a reputable dealer in his area to confirm things on this coin This coin is a problematic specimen. And don't say i'm negative.I hope your honest at your coin shop hmmm JC
Your assessment of the coin below sounds as if you are stating facts/conclusions (about what a dealer or grading company would do) rather than mere opinions. And none of us who have to make guesses based on the images provided are in nearly as good of a position to make a determination as someone who sees it in person. As I mentioned previously, an in-hand examination of the coin might easily clear up any concerns about it.
Of course and in hand examination is the best way I agree totally with you it will clear it up,but what i'm seeing is a problematic coin the same views a dealer might see and a grading company might see that's all jc
It's a nice find, certainly not junk silver and perhaps worth a lot if it is firmly established that it isn't a S mintmark. Peace dollars never seem to tone as nicely as morgans. As long as you ignore Just Coins and follow the advice of others who have posted here, you should be able to realize close to full and fair value.
Well we just established by Toad, and frogs have good eyes it;s an S mint so the coin is worth about 20 bucks in the condition about G4 it;s close to bullion value cloudsweeper JC
One of my points was that it might not be at all problematic if/once seen in person by a dealer or grading company. Yet, to me, at least, your posts sound as if it is a foregone conclusion that it will be a problematic coin in-hand, too. And we have no way of knowing that, at this point. I apologize in advance if I misunderstood your posts.
The area in question does not look like a mm. If there is a safe way anyone knows how to remove toning I think it should be done to solve the matter. But there still isn't enough evidence to prove that this coin is not an 1928-P.
We have established no such thing and it's particularly reckless to make such pronouncements based on images.
I'm totally confused about where the mint mark is supposed to be. Here are three pix from the internet, and the mint mark is positioned in three different places. Here's one towards the top of the last ray: Here's one more towards the middle of the ray: And here's one towards the bottom of the ray at: In any event -- I will try to re-scan the coin I'm holding tonight.
Yes your right but that area seems very difficult to establish if it is a P or S, toning will not cover up the mint mark but corrosion will I have magnified it about 400 times and I see a little indention were the mm was, possibly removed which doe's make this coin suspecious of tampering with. Well we just have to see the conclusion of this coin in the future JC
Well if you take into consideration how worn the focal areas are and the FEATHER area reverse of the focal area the obverse of the focal area cheekand the high points, plus so many scratches and distraction marks then add on eye appeal then add on possible corrosion or even if is toning it;s ugly and that will bring the grade down to a G4 and may even be body baged. You know how technical the garding companys are the coin speaks for itself. The coin won't even be slabbed to me and not worth it ,to get it graded even if it's a p mint I wouldn't trust sending it to a grading company like i said they may body bag it ,if it is a p sell it raw in the grade of G4 it would be a fair deal to the buyer . Please define your reasons why you think it;s a VF30 I WOULDN'T DOUBT HOW MANY TIMES DIFFERENT GRADERS DISPUTED OVER A COINS GRADE AT THE GRADING COMPANYS UNDERSTAND WERE I'M COMING FROM/ JC
