I just watched an eBay auction end where 1 roll of P's and 1 roll of D's Lincoln pennies (Birthplace) went for almost 80 dollars. Is this strickly due to the mint roll wrapper or are people just that crazy. Since the pennies are the same as those in the bank roll wrappers all I can figure is that there must be something special about the wrappers which I've never heard of before.
It is crazy but I am glad I picked up a few when they first came out. I may sell them on Ebay since they are bring that heavy money.
That's certainly new news to me, i haven't heard any think with the prices that high. real crazy people in this world to pay that much. JC
The Log Cabin 2 roll set from the mint has sold for $80 and up since they sold out at the mint. The mintage was a lot lower then the Formative years set. which last week when I checked were still being offered by the mint. Guess it comes down to supply and demand. The mint knows they made a mistake limiting the production on the first issue, so they made a boat load of the second issue. More they make the more they sell. Bill :smile
It was a roll each of the log cabin (birthplace) pennies. I can still walk up to my bank and get rolls for a buck a pair. I just wondered why the mint wrappers were going for so much. I haven't seen wrapped rolls going for that price.
However, this is circulated coinage. They don't sell it as much as they put it in circulation to meet demand.
Yes, read above. The Log Cabins from the Mint sold out and the crazies on Ebay bid them up to 80 bucks a roll. They are the SAME coins as the ones from the bank, so, yes, they are essentially paying for the wrappers. Can you really go to your bank and get rolls of Log Cabins? If so, you are lucky. You could sell them for a premium on Ebay (not nearly the premium of the mint wrapped rolls).
I have some on ebay now. They are up to $51. 3 days to go...I will put more on soon as I think they will go down in price.
You are right most of what is minted goes into circulation but they have sold a lot of 2 roll sets for $8.95 a set. I am sure they enjoy the extra $7.95 they make for the wrapper. Heck for once they cover the materal and production cost and make something. Bill
I think it will be some time before prices go back down. The third and fourth design Mint rolls still need to be released and each of these will refocus interest on the Birthplace Mint roll sets.
Well there is a lower population, in the mint wrappers, there is a set mintage of 96,000, and they sold out by the US mint. The pennies are no different to me, and I wouldn't pay $80 for a 2 roll set, of pennies, when I could get the same thing, for a little over face (But I wouldn't even pay a cent over face for them)
I cleared a $270 profit on my 5 sets. I didn't plan to sell them but after I seen the crazy prices I decided to sell. I sold 2 sets for the $100 Buy-It-Now for each set. The other went in the high $90's
I live just 40 miles from his birth place, and i still can't get rolls of the first ones. The banks that i've gone to said that they will not be getting the new pennies. I did come across 3 rolls of #2 , but not from the banks. I got around 15 of the double dies out of 1 roll. I got 5/6 of 'em have a very nice die crack and / or die brake starting from the end of the log (right side bottom) by the grass. They just about wipe out the letters CLV.
If you would like to watch more mint roll wrapper prices. Watch Harrison and Tyler presidentiaL mint wrapped rolls. Quick sell outs and quickly went for double issue price +.
96,000 rolls or 96,000 pennies? Where did you get that number from? I haven't heard any mintage numbers for 2009 coins yet. Just curious.
I see. iwas looking around for mintage numbers and came across this: http://2009lincolncents.com/2009-lincoln-cent-mintages/
