So, I thought it might be nice for some posters to find random, knowledgeable information about coins they might not have known previously. This way everyone has something to learn when reading/posting on this subject. I'll go first. Here we have the (1900) Lafayette Dollar *The Obverse depicts George Washington, and marquis de Lafayette. *It is was not only the first commemerative U.S dollar coin, but it is also the first US coin to depict a U.S president. *Created by Charles E. Barber *36,026 minted. http://www.coinsite.com/content/Commemoratives/Lafayette.asp Your Turn.
The Lafayette Dollar is also the first US coin to depict a person on both the obverse and the reverse. Lafayette's bust appears (along with Washington's) on the obverse and Lafayette also appears on the reverse in the form of a statue where he is mounted on his horse.
As most of you know, the Lafayette Dollar is one of my all time favorite United States coins. With regards to the OP, I would like to make some clarifications. Mintage: There were 50,000 pieces struck with only 36,026 sold. The remainder were returned to the mint where they were finally melted in 1945. Date: The coin is technically undated and 1900 is part of the legend. Please visit the OP's link to coinsite.com for more information. One of the most interesting aspects of the Lafayette Dollar are the easily identifiable die varieties. There are technically 5 different die varieties of the Lafayette Dollar. Feel free to read about them in my thread: http://www.cointalk.com/forum/t50032-2/ Maybe you can tell me the DuVall number for the Lafayette Dollar shown in the OP?
Thank you Lehigh for the clarification, I was MIA from this sight when you posted your terrific post-up about this coin!
My pleasure, and thank you for starting another thread about the Lafayette Dollar. This one is for you my friend. The current king of my collection PCGS MS65 (photos courtesy of Mark Goodman). BTW: It is a Duvall 3-D, a challenging variety.
One more tidbit about this Commemorative is it is heavily counterfeited and there are probably more counterfeits than authentic. :goof: So, as with other series, always educate yourself first before buying and be extremely cautious when buying one raw off Ebay, since the odds are very good that it will be counterfeit. Great thread! :thumb: Ribbit
