Found my first proof in circulation (I think NOT!)

I have sorted all of my loose change by coin and decade. I saw a bright coin sticking out of my 1960's cents jar. Here it is:


1968 S

This coin is a proof, right?

It doesn't look near as nice and shiny as it did under the magnifying glass. A lot more nicks and scratches than I initially saw.Nothing huge to brag about, but I thought it was cool. Cool enough for me to keep and throw in a holder.

yeah, it isnt.
It would have to be 1975 or later for it to be a proof, for S mint coins.

 

Looks like a regular ole' penny to me... Just from circulation... Not a proof

 

Dang. I was reading somewhere that since 1968, S mint coins were proofs. I thought that was even cooler, since it was the first year. I must have misinterpreted what I read.

 

I agree w/ Magman In 1968 San Francisco produced 258,270,001 business strikes and 3,041,506 proofs. Looks like you got that odd 1 cent business strike. :smile

In addition, it LOOKS like a business strike.
Try finding a picture of a 1968 proof, you'll see the difference.

Lastly... I found one of these in change myself not too long ago - so it's not too unusual to find copper Red cents.

it's still fun to find old copper though, especially S mints... and of course, it's better when they look new

Not a proof, but still a keeper. The 1968-S is the lowest mintage Memorial cent produced.

Id keep that cent if I found it. Look at this as a learning expirience.

 

Yes it came out perfect, everyone could tell exactly what you had.

 

I hear that the 1968 s from circulation is a rare (though not valuable) find.

a proof could be pretty messed up, and you'd still KNOW it's a proof when you saw one. Especially for the newer coins.

 

think it depends on what part of the country you're from. S mint 1960s & 1970s are everywhere where I'm at.

 

in 1968 they struck the Lincoln cent for both the proofs & circulation.

This was a circ strike.
