Hey all, I had heard that the mint wasn't coining any 2009 5 and 10 cent business strikes but I just got two new 2009P dimes so that rumour must not be accurate. Also I received my 2009S proof sets today, they are sweet (four lenses of coins). Has anyone else received any 2009 business strike 5 or 10 cent coins? Happy collecting!!
The first one was found by one of our forumites and sold for big bucks on Ebay. you can find the thread if you search around.
The facts are, that the mint is done producing them for the year... There are floods of 2009 P's on ebay now, but the nickels are still hot. Still no D's to be found... Here are the mintage numbers DIMES 2009-P 96.5 Million 2009-D 49.5 Million Nickels 2009-P 39.84 Million 2009-D 39.36 Million
The Mint is not minting any more 2009 5 & 10 cent coins for circulation. In other words, they were minting them and, due to lack of demand, stopped.
Even with the quoted mintage very, very low it is still fairly large number wise and there are enough collectors of both that it may be difficult to obtain higher graded coins.
Won't ever be rare, or a key date for numismatics as a whole, but maybe a semi key in their own respected series. People will hoard these, like the No Cents 1883 Nickel, and I reckon higher graded examples will be just like them as well, not all that rare. We will just have to wait and see how this plays out
2009 American Silver Eagle MS69 Hope it's okay to put this inquiry into this post since the above 5¢ & 10¢ questions seem to have been answered, and I couldn't find an open ongoing 2009 American Silver Eagle thread to post this in. Just received a small order of 2009 ASE coins, all are NGC MS69. Right out of the box I was surprised to see spots (magenta arrows) on three of the four coins in the order. And on the two blue labeled slabs, they both share a type of 'bag mark' in an identical location (yellow arrows). Posted a bunch of reference pics that I shot with a digital 6.3mb point-n-shoot through an 8x lupe, and a couple of the 'shadowy' shots through a higher magnification lupe. Question: I'm looking for a consensus on whether you would return the three coins due to these spots? And what are these spots to you? (I hope no one sneezed on them.) I am considering a return request to replace the three with spots, as I have never received American Silver Eagle coins with such spots in the past, and never so in slabs. Thanks for looking and your replies.
Personally, those white spots are why I stopped collecting this series and sold everything I had amassed over the years. They are corrosive and not good for the surface of the coin. I would return them as they can stay the same or worse but not get better.
Whatever the mint is using to rinse the blanks is not working. I have over 20 new cents and all of them have water spots similar to your ASE's
Return them, supposedly MS69 is supposed to be one tick under perfect. Your pictures show the flaws very well, an ms69 should be where you have to look pretty hard to find the flaws, those jump out at you.
I don't collect slabbed ASEs because they're supposed to be bullion coins, once they're in a slab with a grade, they take on alot of supposed numismatic value just because of that "official" grade
Thank you everyone. I really appreciate your feedback. I have initiated the return process with the site I bought these from. Greyford Is there a thread here on CT or a good website that I could read which discusses the problems mentioned about the water marks and improper cleansing of blanks, and these residues on coins that have this problem. ASEs or any other coins for the matter of learning about this will help me. Chip they sure are a tick below grade, this I included in my letter of disappointment requesting a return/refund. Coinman_Ben this experience has changed my future decisions on buying these coins slabbed. Thanks so much everyone.
I don't think that there is a thread about it. It was just a pesonal observation about the coins I have gotten from new rolls as change.
Thanks Greyford. And thank you all for your advice. Those coins were promptly sent back today to the seller for refund. And with the new hopeful news from the US Mint about 2009 ASEs possibly forthcoming, I'll probably just reinvest my money through those channels and slab proofs only on my own dime.
2009 dime and nickel might become the largest hoarding of all american coinage. thus those will be a face value coins even the mintage are the lowest for their respective type. remember what we considered rare is a few pieces to few hundred pieces. now we are talking about ten of millions or more pieces being hoarded. please........
