Part 2 - Bringing My Type Set Website Back

In my first post I outlined the way I believe I'd like my website to operate.
And I asked for opinions about the presentation format for (4).
Thanks for all the responses. All were positive.

Here's the current plan again. (I'll be asking for opinions after.)
    - (1) There'll be an intro page or two. That will link to:
    - [1½] A top level table of contents listing metal types. (Forgot about this step.) That will link to:
    - (2) A top level table of contents listing face values only. That will link to:
    - (3) A sub-level table of contents listing types within a particular face value. That will link to:
    - (4) A view of my particular coin of that type (obverse and reverse). That will link to:
    - (5a & 5b) Two separate screen-sized larger views, one just the obverse and one just the reverse, of my particular coin of that type.

So that you can see what my intent is with (1), (2) and (3), here's my OLD website.
It needs a LOT of updating (new coins, upgrades, etc.)
And (5a & 5b) will take a LOT of work since I think I'll have to re-image a lot of the coins.

BUT please give me opinions about the general operation of the website:

I will check it out when I get home tonight - everything sounds resonable.

It is okay. Personally, I would like a more streamlined presentation with less clicking to see images. If the coins are in a album, I suggest having thumbnails of each album page available. If not in a album, perhaps lay them out in similar fashion and take some general pics of multiple coins in that layout.

Thumbnails are good, I know a lot of work, but most web surfers appreciate them.

Another suggestion: perhaps have a highlights page, with maybe five to ten of your personal favorites of the set. That may be a lot to ask, but personally, I have zero interest in making about 300 mouse clicks to see every image of every coin in a type set. I doubt very many others would either. A highlights tour or slide show of maybe five to ten favorite coins, with thumbnails, and a sentence or two why that coin is a favorite, that kind of thing, I might take the time to go through. The why the coin is a favorite, might be because the coin has sentimental value, such as first coin bought, coin handed down from a relative, was very hard to find in that grade, bought from a favorite dealer or just because it looks nice. To me, the stories are often more interesting to me than another photo of another commonly available coin.

Keep at it. Hopefully, it is a labor of love. A nice type set is certainly a worthy goal.

I agree, too many clicks to get to the images.

I would consider a table with all types listed and only one click to the screen with images.

All the coins are slabbed so there's no real life album.
I could make a virtual album, but I can't see how that would help vs. my textual lists.
You would either be clicking on a thumbnail or a text link.
If you can give me a link to a site that operates like you are describing, please post it so that I can see better what you have in mind.

There's no excessive clicking that I can see.
For instance, if you wish to look at my one cent coins then the process would be:
Copper Coins > One Cent > then the particular type
After that it's > Next One Cent etc.
Or after looking at a coin, then > Back to Metal Index

Again, links to websites that operate the way you have in mind would really help me.

    LOL
Fortunately it is not part of the NGC Registry Type Set otherwise there would be another hole in the collection.
As it is I don't (and probably will never) have a 1907 High Relief Saint.
And I'm missing almost all of the early (1790's) types too.

    I agree, too much clicking.

    Here's something easy to do:
So you have your list: Copper, Silver, Nickel, etc.
but under each denomination have the types bulleted.
    So It might look like:
    Copper Coins:
    -One Cent
    --Flowing Hair
    --Bust
    --Braided Hair
    -Two Cent

    etc.

    OR

Just have 1 cent, two cent, etc
and show ALL the types on a single page. :)
(i.e. all the large cents on one page, all the small cents on another)

    Interesting idea.
    First, I like it.
Second, I think I can do it.

I want the coins large enough so that a person can get a good look at them.
That's why I do one coin per screen page.
I could group them as you suggest, but then the viewer would have to scroll.
I think scrolling is worse than clicking.

I love type sets.. and the clicking didn't bother me at all. Thumbnails would be neat... just easier to pick and choose what you want to see. Anyway... some really nice coins!

Yep - the clicking did not bother me, but thumbnails would be nice.

Most photo sites use thumbnails to avoid so much clicking just to see what each picture is. At the link below there is a collection of bird photos using medium size thumbnails. Clicking on the thumb goes to the larger photo.

    http://photo.net/gallery/photocritique/filter?period=365&rank_by=sum&category=Birds&store_prefs_p=0

If the above link is too long start at:
    http://photo.net/gallery/
then click on the "bird" category.

For a coin site, you might consider displaying the entire set on one page with small thumbnail images (80x80 pixels), with the coin description under each small image. You can go obverse only, or obverse and reverse if you want to do the extra work. A person can click on each thumbnail of interest to bring up the larger image. There are any number of freeware utilities for shrinking images. I use a program called "Easy Thumbnails."

Another way to go, might be to emulate the Dansco 7070 album pages, and have virtual album pages with the coins from each paper album page on one webpage. A good many type set collectors use that album or similar and are used to seeing the coins in that display order. If you would like to go that route, here is someone else's webpage that I found with a search, that consists only of photos of their Dansco album pages so you can see which coins are on each page.
    http://mysite.verizon.net/w2up3/dansco_7070/type_set.htm

If you decide to go ahead with a highlights page, for your top five or ten favorite coins, you might use similar medium size thumbnails (maybe 200 x 200 pixels) as the bird page uses.

    Enjoy.
