Well, I haven't started roll searching yet, but I'm a cashier at a hardware store and most of our customers are really old. Recently I've started looking at the money they give me. 1964 quarter, a silver war nickle, a couple 2 dollar bills, 2 bicentennial dollar coins, a really old series 20 dollar bill, 7 wheat pennies, 1 half dollar. All in a couple weeks!

Are there certain coins I should be looking for over others? I'm not really good at the dates, usually find the silver and wheat pennies by color. And I grab any old bills and halves and dollar coins.

Well any quarter, half, or dime, that is 1964 or prior, you should keep.

For the Washington quarters, the key date of the series is 1932 D and 1932 S
I can't think of the rare key date, if any for the dimes
For the wheats, there are so many! 1909 S VDB, 1936 Double Die, 1917 Double Die, 1955 Double Die, 1958 Double Die, 1914 D, 1931 S, then semi keys which are the earlier years, in the S mint (1909 S- 1915 S)
I suggest buying a redbook, or a guide to untied states coins, 63rd edition 2010.

On the 2005 Bison(s), so do I... But now only if the condition is "good".

opened 16 rolls of nickels and found

    1 1939
    1 1941
    1 1955-D
    3 1958
    1 1983 Canadian

a couple dozen 2005's which I examined for any doublings or bison anomolies. None found. Started on dimes but only opened a couple of rolls. Nothing interesting.

I'm partway through my 2nd box of halves and found a 62 Franklin. Wow! I was very excited. When I'm done with the box, I'll post all that I find as I have found a 64 and a few 40% so far as well.

Now and then I will pick up some rolls from the bank but have never ordered a box or bag of coins to search. I am considering getting into boxes a little more at this time. Can I get some suggestions for ordering boxes from a bank about: When you order a box from a bank branch who do you ask at the branch, the teller, customer service? What do you ask/tell them so you don't get a whole box of the same issue coin? Is there any fee on top of the value of the coins for placing an order? Do they take back your deposit of coins once you've been through them or consider it a hassle. (especially regarding people who've dealt with halves since banks don't always have them on hand and might not want to have chunks of boxes coming back.)

Feel free to add anything else you consider helpful in this venture... Thanks all.

    WHOA!!!
You found a bicentennial gold plated half???
I have one of those too...

Yup, I've found a few gold plated halves myself, even a gold Ike. I know they don't have any extra value but since I'm still new to this can anyone give context to who/why these were put into circulation? Clearly post-mint, and I expect someone trying to create a perception of "extra value."

...Had them, they have come up missing off my desk, the good news is I "caught" the coin taker red handed with the 2007P in her hands, the bad news my 2 year old is not talking about where she put the other coins..:(
