I got a Chinese coin at the flea market the other day, and I paid $1 for it. I just thought it looked interesting. Does anyone know what it is? Thanks!

Probably 1 Yuan (Dollar) from year 3 of the chinese republic, Y 329. And, I´m sorry to say, probably fake.

The real stuff is worth $13,50 in Very Good, $15 in Fine and $18 in Very Fine. It should weigh 26,4 grams if real

I have a fake specimen my self.

Thank You for your reply. I thought it might be fake, but I don't have any scales to confirm it. I bought it from a Chinese lady at the flea market. She had several of them with a few different designs. I also have this "5 PTAS" (Pesetas) coin which I read was from Spain before they switched to the Euro. Any idea what it's worth?

KM#786, cu-ni, mintage from 1957-75 approximately 1-billion. Check that six pointed star near the bottom of the reverse on the left side to determine the actual year your coin was minted.

Krause values range from 10¢ to $80 in circulated grades.

I dont think it is out of reason that a Yuan Shikai 1 Yuan coin could be had a flea market for a dollar...they are not that terribly rare. I have come across deals like that for the real deal...

Just my opinion, but Chinese seller is not about to sell large genuine silver coin for $1

I am pretty sure that it is fake. It looks like several that I had. I bet it sticks to a magnet.

It is supposed to contain about 3/4 oz of silver, which currently should be worth about $10 melted. So, selling it for $1 would be slightly weird.

Where did you come across deals like that? I'd like to visit that place...

Run a magnet over the Fatman. If magnetic its fake. Here is a real General Kai. Ripley

Carefully compare the pattern of stars on the epaulet of both pictures. That's one area the Chinese counterfeiters almost always screw up.
