This thread on CU by TomB shows the value of that site, IMO. Here is his experience/show report from Baltimore: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=725589&STARTPAGE=1 While I don't know TomB and he is at a galactic level of collecting compared to me, I have solicited his opinion via PM on two occasions and he has always been courteous and helpful. So, my point is that while I like it here, there are good people on CU too and there is much to learn in both locations.
Tom's numismatic knowledge for a collector is astounding. The only thing more impressive than his knowledge is his collection of coins. Every one I have ever seen is superlative. I have posted the link to his website several times in the past and will post it here because I think it is information that every aspiring numismatist should know. http://www.ivyleaguecoin.com/home.html IMO, Tom owns two of the most attractive type coins I have ever seen for their respective series: his Mercury Dime & Barber Half Dollar are incredible. On the NGC forum, when TomB talks, people listen, as well they should.
Thanks , great link that everyone should read , especially the areas on dipping and Monster Toned Coins . rzage:thumb:
Thad, "THEY are more emotion," etc.? You make it sound as if that whole bunch ran you off on a rail. On the link provided by the OP, I read that thread, and I think that's great, they're noticing us, keep it up. That whole thread is a compliment to CoinTalk, you ask me. So much so some of the idle minds there have to spend their idle time putting us down. Imagine a big forum like that getting that charged-up over CoinTalk. Maybe we're doing something right, here? You think? I say, ignore them.
Eddie- the parking lot thing is a joke right?? Of course it is. I think Thad was dogged on CU (indirectly) re: Verdigone which was a total herd mentality if you read it. I am stoked we lit a fire under them. There are a lot more average collectors than upper crust and I love that this site caters to all ranges of people. No dividing lines here. Total lost people are welcome and we teach them and help them out. I think we have only run out really crazy people (you know who they are) on a rare occassion when they incessantly torture us, ask us for money (remember that one) or do other weird things. I read a post where the whole community on CU beat down on a guy named Man-O-War. That was pathetic at best- just MHO's. I love this site and have made some great friends. I don't have time to post on lots of sites, so I stick to this one.
There you go. In a lot of cases us and them are the same. That opinion diverges when it comes to Aidan and Kurtdog. Reading both threads, it seems to me that MOST of the comments have been quite civil by both groups.
Not realy sure what all the fuss is about, a number of us frequent other forums some regularly and others not so often no big deal. Some people prefer one to another again that is simply human nature :smile What I did not see was a attack on CoinTalk, ok so one or two people dont like us heck this happens, people get banned, people are asked to moderate there language etc etc and take umbridge (yes I know but it happens LOL) We do have a set of rules here as we have some members who are quite young and we see no need for profanities, we also have moved any political discussion of the forum into its own little den LOL Yes we do get quite a few posts from newbies who have been left or found some coins well honestly so what, everyone here started out as a newbie at one time now woudnt some of you older members have liked to have had a bit of a guiding hand along the way? I know I would (Ok so I lie I had my dad LOL) So basicly to finish, we are two different coin sites we are not compeating and we offer different things to different folk just enjoy what pleases you
I'll just say that I sometimes go to other forums, whether it be for research or just to chat and I've always been proud that this place is my number one forum due to the knowledge of the individuals here and the professionalism they display.
Finally some sanity to this whole thing, Steve. I'll go further and say I think the problem is the issue was framed as an "attack" from the get-go and a lot of us here then just accepted that perception without further consideration and responded accordingly. Let's just drop it.
I agree. I have lurked over there in the past and that forum is fine. But, so is this one. Both have good qualities and both have some lesser qualities. But, both serve their purpose just fine. I choose to post here because I like CT...but I would post there just fine too.
I should say something on this, too. Boss (and Thad, if you're paying attention), I didn't know any of that. Thad, your proprietary formula is "proved," here, for its intended uses. At least, from what I've seen. It's a good product, for its intended uses. Good job on it.
A lot of interesting comments. My take is both places have their merits and both places in this thread and that thread bash each other and praise each other the same. There is a lot of knowledge in both places and if you ask a direct question it will get a good answer in both places.
Well said. I think Doug brought up the point that many of the members here are also members on NGC and PCGS. To me that's great. We are actually just one giant group. The really cool thing about using CT and other forums is the search function, even if you don't wish to post. The information that is out there on topics is just unreal if you have the time to do so. Please don't let the comments of a few take you from a place that you can learn about this great hobby.
