Oh yeah, there is something to be proud of. :rolling: Actually, I will admit there was a 4 year period where I was a hard core Lions fan...but that ended a while back.
Well, I think we all have to do our part... I think a lot of members are getting turned off by the whole "Granny Died and Made Me Rich" threads. I think quailty is still good here, and I don't see posts and threads that I just shy away from, I think we are all just being friendly collectors, sharing knowledge as we go by. If you think quailty is going down, and you don't want to read a lot of the posts and threads here, fine, go to Cointalk Thread Of The Week, those posts have been nominated as helpful, or useful threads, quailty will always be good there, but IMO all the threads here on cointalk are meaningful as are all the posts
Well the way I see it, is that the more CT is mentioned elsewhere, the more traffic there will be over here. It is just inevitable that if you have someone who stumbles across a thread on another site about Coin Talk, it is just human nature to peek over here to see what all the fuss is about. Some of those people just might like how things are done over here than on their other site and decide to stay.
I would say that CT has changed since I have joined. In some ways good and in others bad. I don't have too many complaints though.
In general, I agree. I guess part of it is all this "Make a buck on the latest Mint Offering" and "LP1 and LP2" threads which is affecting all coin forums. And of course, you can skip those threads, but that leaves almost nothing This forum really and truly is way more chatty than the other coin forums I lurk at. How can someone have 50 "meaningful" posts each and every day? Even if you choose "thread of the week", you still have to keep hitting the "Page Down" key to get past the guys who have to post 10 times in each thread. Some of us access Coin Talk while at work during lunch break or on slow Internet connections and having to wade through numerous posts before we get to one that adds something to the thread can get annoying.... Not all of us are sitting all day in front of our computers
Welcome to the newbies! I personally am very glad to see new people join here, and I hope they get as much out of the information shared here on CT as I do. I consider myself pretty new to these sites as well. I'm not all that savvy in blogging forums and when I first posted on CU, I made some protocol mistakes and received some nasty comments, which I took personally. I came very close to terminating my membership there. If it weren't for the very kind words and support from other members there (and some who post here too), especially those who knew me personally, I would have quit. CU does have a wealth of universal knowledge and I have learned a lot and been able to keep abreast of current coin trends through that site, and having my own coin business, I feel it is important to learn, share, and network so I continue my membership there. I now see that there are many on CU who post negative remarks just to try and spark a feud, not because they want to offer some information or opinion. After being on CU for over 6 months now, I can pick out the ones who act like little kids wanting attention, and it's funny, but it is often the same group of people who do this over and over. But this forum is where I feel most "at home." People here are pretty nice and eager to learn, including me. Aside from some who seem to start posts just to boost their numbers (they should keep in mind that quality is much better than quantity!), everyone here seems to behave quite professionally and with respect. I haven't even seen any instances where the moderator/administrator had to step in on any threads - I think the members police themselves pretty well here. And I think that is important and will help this site's reputation garner more respect from the coin community in general.
Kudos to AJ, Penny lady and Mag.:bow: Well its not the first time I have seen CT being attacked in other forums. Dunno if anyone seen this before: http://coinnetwork.ning.com/forum/topics/coin-talks-members-are-blind
Consider the source of that post. He has been banned from most every forum related to coins that I can think of and brags about it. Nice Thread AJ. All forums have their own set of problems, with popularity comes attacks. I don't see a need to even respond to threads that are on a mission to head hunt. If you don't like a response or a particular poster you can always invoke your privilege to block them. I have done it here and have done it at other forums as well. Life is to short.
I visit CU and CT everyday, and enjoy both. There are very knowledgeable people on both forums, but I prefer CT for its more relaxed feeling. PCGS being the owner of the CU site, it seems that the numismatic "industry" is often the subject of threads, which I find gets tiring pretty quickly. Also, so many new threads are posted everyday that one I may have been watching vanishes to page 5 overnight (maybe I just don't read the exciting threads!). Also, the PCGS owners will only tolerate but so much criticism of their operation.(they used to poof any thread that so much as mentioned CAC). Also, two highly regarded numimatists- Laura Sperber (Legend) and Mark Feld- have been banned by the shadowy moderators. I don't know why- if you mention it you'll be banned too! Roger W. Burdette left not long ago because he was disgusted by all the name calling and bullying. Several long time members have left because of other intererests. Another of my interests is numismatic fraud (as in fighting it), and I find that when I post here about some auction of fakes on eBay more interest seems to be generated, whereas on CU it drops to the basement pretty quickly- even a thread about fake PCGS slabs being auctioned here in the US. There seems to be a "head in the sand" approach to the numismatic crime wave about to crest on PCGS (again, I don't think the site owners would take kindly to a comparison with the steps NGC has taken, or DLRC, to combat slab fraud).I don't mean to sound critical, these are just some observations of mine. Personally, I'd like to see some more back and forth among the groups, posting of links to each others' threads, encouraging an exchange of knowledge and ideas-- what these sites are supposed to be about. Tempus fugit!
Well - I for one am certainly glad you joined this forum. Especially posting pictures of that wonderful collection you have. Well plus I got to fill two holes in my collection.
I don't think that any one forum is better than another. Each one is different and has attributes that are more suitable to different collectors based on their experience, financial situation, and personality. The knowledge on the CU forum is astounding but many of the members wield their supposed expertise like a deadly weapon. The arrogance and intolerance on that forum from the trolls stains the reputation of the entire forum including it's upstanding members. Add to the fact that it is very difficult to navigate and you end up with an environment that is not conducive to lesser experienced collectors. I don't post on that forum and will not join because of the gestapo tactics employed by the moderators of that forum who have never heard of the 1st amendment to the Constitution. I have no interest in being a member where such blatant censorship is both accepted and applauded. The NGC forum is a friendlier place that includes just about every CU member that was banned from the CU forum. The knowledge of the members on the NGC forum is on par with that on CU but the membership is smaller and the traffic and activity is rather slow. That was the main reason that I joined the Cointalk community. While this forum is much friendlier and inviting to newbies, it is not immune to problems. There seems to be a significant anti TPG sentiment among some of the members on this site that turns off the CU and NGC members from joining. While CTers complain about the CU's intolerance for newbies, they could easily make the same complaint about plastic bashing here. The fact that coins are encapsulated by a TPG does not automatically mean that the collector of TPG graded material does not appreciate coins. I think that the TOTW feature here gives incentive to members to make meaningul posts that provide interesting and educational threads about all areas of numismatics. The knowledge and expertise is improving every day on this forum as a result. Cointalk is by far my favorite coin forum.
Aidan at work - pun intended. Too bad. He new some things about coins, just could be bothered to follow the rules.
CT, NGC, and PCGS Forums all have good and some not so good aspects to them. I've learned to pass on the negative aspects and stick to the positive.
Leeg, that is a beautiful toned coin! That is a very nice one, and you should be proud to own it? (You own it right?)
I must say that this is such a great site that I've never tried to go anywhere else. I love this place!
