I like the toning but I don't really collect unc jeffersons enough to know what I should pay for this one.

P.S. I see a little mark in the steps. Is it enough to reduce the value to that of a not FS coin?

I can't help you on price because I don't follow them closely, but the hit on the steps is not problematic when it comes to value as it is taken into account in both the FS designation and the grade.

That said, I wouldn't have bought this coin as an FS -- the rest of Monticello and areas on the obverse are far from well struck, and I (personally) take issue with paying premiums for a strike designation on coins that are not otherwise fully struck.

If that is FS than I am a monkey's uncle. I have seen several FS candidates come back without the designation because of hits smaller than that nick.

PCGS says $25 for a MS64FS, Numismedia says $9 for a MS64. That looks like a pretty good ding on the steps, I'm still wondering how it got a FS designation. I've been picking up raw Jeffersons for less than $5 on ebay over the past week, I have a 42-S that is blast white and perfect that I think has a good chance at 66+ FS. That said I certainly wouldn't pay more than a total of $10 for it, and that would be pushing it. I picked up a PCGS MS66 1944S for less than $21 total the other night.

That is not a true FS coin, given the major (and obvious) disruption. Even if it were full steps, that is a common feature on this date. With the ultra-common grade of MS-64, I'd agree completely with xtrmbrdr -- this is a $10 coin; $15 if you're putting together a set and really need it.

I agree with everything in this post with the exception of paying $15 for that coin. Nobody could ever really need this coin. There are less than 150 examples of this date graded MS64 and below and over 1700 in gem++. There is a reason for that: slabbed Jefferson Nickels are not really collectible under gem state grades. Even the MS65's are so common that they are all very affordable.

If you like the toning, pay the $10. Otherwise, save your money for a Jefferson that is graded higher and properly. If you want a real full step Jefferson, stick with NGC, they are far more stingy with the designation.

Deserved or not that is a beautiful coin that I would pay that for any day.
