Nothing really special, but it is, however, my first dime! (Remember, I am a new collector.) It is a 1916 Barber Dime. What would you grade it? I predict it would grade good at best. I bought this at a local flea market. There are no coin shops in my area at all, so I have to rely on flea markets. There are three that I go to, and each has about two people who sell coins. They are not big flea markets. I did, however, find another vendor that sells coins, but they were not in yesterday. One of the vendors had seven or eight wartime nickels that were in really good shape, and also some two dollar bills which I believe were uncirculated because they did not have any folds or creases whatsoever. That vendor was not in either, so I couldn't buy any of that stuff. There was a lady who had some one dollar bills from the 50's that had the blue seal, but she wanted $6 and $8 for them, so I backed down. Is that a reasonable price? What out of the mentioned stuff should I go after? Thanks for your help!

Well, for your first dime I think you did good. Barber dimes are a great set to work on and can usually be found relatively cheap. I'm about done with my set and they all grade G-VF, nothing fancy, but a lot of fun.

I think that says it all. I do not need high grade sets and while barbers are not my favorite I like the one you posted. Congrats and hope many more to come!

Yes, nice original coin. Grade: G-4.

But a real G-4, full rims both sides, that is the way that you want them.

As for the silver certificates: Pass. The price seems high, unless they were in very high grade.

That's a swell coin to start a set with. Not being familiar with baber dimes, where is the word LIBERTY found? Somehow I give it a VG-8. That's how much I like your coin. zeke

That is an excellent first dime. Looks to have no major hits or distractions and nice original uncleaned crust.

    Congrats

    I agree.

If you're doing this for the fun of it (and we ALL should be doing it for that!), then try to get at least full rims on the coins. If you're lucky enough to be able to get out and see these coins in person then take your time and be picky - even if they're in the bargain bin!!! There are good and bad bargains!

Yeah, I thought that sounded a little high on the silver certificates. They were in regular circulated condition. I bought a Liberty Walking half dollar from a lady at the flea market for $8. Is that high?I really don't know what I should be paying for the coins and dollars. She also had a Susan B. Anthony that said "close date". What does that mean? She had $77 on it! She has all kinds cases of coins, which include Indian head pennies, Buffalo nickels, Barber dimes, silver Roosevelt dimes, Silver quarters (mostly dated in the 30's).

What I like about your dime is that no one has cleaned it- it has that nice original gray color that comes from honest use and being LEFT ALONE all that time-- really nice! My mistake when I started was buying a lot of bright white stuff that had been cleaned and dipped. I think you're way ahead of where I was!

Thanks, Catbert! I actually figured out the avatar thing about 2 days ago.. day late and a dollar short, as usual!
