He's really working right now for ICG ,and did work for PCGS and NGC and now he's coming to OFGS Old fart Grading service .So if you want your coins graded by one of the best i will give you the address No sliders please JC
I would grade the coin MS64+ BN - it is very clean with no marks, even toning, and a decent strike. I can't tell for sure from the photos but the feathertips, which are commonly weakly struck, look pretty detailed, and the shield is hard to tell whether it's a full strike or not, but IMO from the photos I can see NO WEAR on this coin at all, and am surprised at those who think the strike weaknesses are wear. I think it's a beautiful coin, with such smooth surfaces and pretty luster. p.s. If there was wear, it would at least show up on the hair curl and diamonds - and I see none there whatsoever.
here's the number for the old farts grading service and the web page www.oldfartsgrade itAu63 no notMs 60 orAU58/.OLD Phone 222 OFGS JC
In simpler terms I mean I don't think the coin is worthy of an MS65 or higher grade. And as I said, because of the flatness of the rim at 3 o'clock I would have to see the coin in hand before I could make a call either way as to whether the coin would grade MS or not grade at all because it had been messed with. Based on those pics I can't tell one way or the other - but rim area bothers me.
I agree with the Penny Lady, (and not because this is my coin!) It is actually a nice specimen, with some red, and plenty of luster showing which my poor quality pictures just cannot capture. I see no wear on this coin. This is the difficulty we all have when asked to judge coins from photos.
Thanks Doug. I think I understand now - for some reason I though you were implying something specific about the rim and I did not understand that. Gotcha now.
I am really not trying to be smart alec or anything. But seriously; as a dealer how do reconcile the key dates in reputable 3rd party holder? Do you buy them and sell them at what you grade the coin? I mean I hear so many times the line "weak strike on key dates" - but give me a break, some of the graded 1877 IHCs are ridiculous in my opinion. I looked long and hard before I found one where I could handle the price and grade. To me, in all honesty, it would be refreshing to see a dealer have for sale a IHC graded by NGC/PCGS - that the holder was like VF20 and the price was for a F12 coin, where it was stated NGC/PCGS screwed the pooch on this one. Rather than just letting the buyer figure it out for themself. I have seen this on a few large cents - if I recall correctly I think they were ANACs and some of the NGC Reiver collection.
why do we keep coming back to this same thing all of the time??? Research and learn to grade the coin for yourself and forget what ANYONE including the TPGs have to say. Based on your grade and your grade alone, assess it's value and either buy, sell or don't. The market will tell you if you're right when you go to sell. Joe, I use the ANA standards to grade as well, and we have gone round and round about market grading on this forum, but what it always comes down to is simple: Do you want to buy the coin or not? Because if you're depending on someone else to make your dollars and cents decisions for you, I think you will lose almost every time. Oddly, even though I grade by what I consider to be different standards, look at what Doug (someone who definitely has a different opinion) and I have graded coins versus the other. More often than not, we come to almost exactly the same grade.
oh, and BTW... I'd like anyone who grades by ANA standards to tell me what the difference is between an MS-63 and an MS-64 because IIRC, the ANA has no standard for MS-64, only MS-63 and MS-65.
Joe, don't kid yourself, you can't go wrong with the old fart grading system, a.k.a., condition grading. Markets have a way of changing. So much for the market grading system. And then you can loosen that up even further for the way the TPGs apparently conceive of and practice market grading.
Joe, I believe that I have been collecting about as long as you have and I think that you are pretty close to me in age (within 10 years). While I do not profess to be an old fart, I am certainly qualified to do so. Doug, thanks for clearing up my confusion, I must have been having a flashback.
First post over here, some will know my nickname from the PCGS Forum. Tough coin to grade. I took out my grading guide and looked up some similar coins on Teletrade and am still on the fence. Here is a Teletrade coin that looks very similar, it went PCGS AU58 However, it also hammered for $45, or $5 less than many of the MS64 BN coins.
Red Tiger, welcome to CT. I saw your posts on the "Is this the most active numismatic message board" thread and this is a friendly forum, so I hope you stick around here too.
