Hey I have a lincoln from the whole cherrios millennium thing and it appears to have been double struck, a little above the date you can see another 2000, and a little below the Liberty you can see another liberty, but it is so faint I can't get it to photograph, I'll keep trying...would it be worth anything?
No idea without a photo. Are you sure it is double-struck (actually struck twice in the coining chamber) or are you describing machine doubling. Or do you mean it is a doubled die?
No I mean exactly what I said double struck, as in the observe was hit 2 times and it is very faintly noticeable TRYING TO GET A PIC!
If it is truely double struck with a measurable rotation, you'll have a keeper. Be sure to check for other evidence such as a ghosted profile and a ghosted motto. Check the reverse as well.
If it is truly double struck the reverse would would also have been struck twice, not only the obverse.
Is the coin still in it's Cherrios Millennium cello packaging? I ask as sometimes the impression of the Date, LIBERTY and some other Lettering can get impressed on of plastic of the cello packaging, then the coin rotates slightly within the cello packaging, giving the illusion that the coin was Double Struck when it was not. Try shaking the coin in the cello packaging to relocate it to a (another) clear area of the packaging and see if you still see a doubled Date and LIBERTY. Frank
Okay got it to show up a little on my camera, but it is much more clear in person, it is 100% legible in person the full liberty, and the full 2000 but it is faint
I'd bet it was simply strike doubling (i.e. mechanical doubling) -- and not worth a premium. However, I'd really like to see larger photos to be sure.
It is really hard to show on the pics! all that shows up is two of of 00's it is above the 2000 on an angle, the liberty is on the same angle! could not get it to show up though..I need a loupe!
Goldstone, I can barely make of the 2000 above the Date but I believe that it is pretty much the same scenario as i described in my earlier post! The image of the Date and Liberty were impress into the cello of the 2x2, the coin rotated and now appears to have two dates and two LIBERTY's but doesn't. Frank
Hm..I was just wondering do you think the possible value is worth removing it from the sealed plastic? I just like it because it is sealed
If the coin you are talking about is the one in the pictures in the 8th post then don't worry about it being "sealed" because it isn't. It is just stapled into a 2X2 and since it isn't in a sealed Cheerios holder it wouldn't be considered to be a Cheerios Millennium cent either even if it did come from such a holder.
Just send it to James Wiles at CONECA for attribution or explanation. The photo's aren;t anywhere near good enough to make any calls. At the minimum, if it is a "Wide AM" as the 2x2 indicates, its pretty cool. And ditto what Conder said! (Hey Michael! )
I don't quite understand your question. The pic show a coin in a standard 2 x 2 holder and not in the original cheerios packaging. How do you know it was a cheerios coin? Also removing the coin from the 2 x 2 just means you need to put it into another 2 x 2 which only costs 3 cents.
