Best and worst graders

In your opinion, what are some of the best and worst grading companies?
What is your opinion on having coins graded?

I'm all for having coins graded!
I prefer all my coins to be graded, and it is a great way for collectors that are beginning to learn how to grade coins.
I own coins that are not graded, and at one point, have thought about selling each and every one, with a few exceptions, but I decided to hold on to them. Most raw coins I own, are low graded so there is no point in getting them graded
Now to answer your question about the best... NGC, and PCGS are the ones I'd buy. ANACS and ICG are good, just not for me, but if I can get a good deal on an undergraded coin in an ICG or ANACS slab, I'd totally do it, but have yet to seen one undergraded, that is worth buying
PCGS will always have the best resale, followed by NGC
I'd, at the moment stay away from all the random "XYZ" grading companies...
If you can not accurately grade coins yourself, I'd suggest getting a redbook, or a book that is on the coins that you collect

If you are buying on ebay, make sure it has a return policy, and good pictures

 

Both RLM and I both have recent upgrades from ICG into PCGS plastic......yep, true story

Of course, they were crackouts

 

Do I understand the Greysheet Coin Market Indicator is a comparison of the service's bid prices on several different series of coins? If so, the latest I have shows NCG slightly ahead of PCGS overall, and ICG significantly more than ANACs. So is the idea that PCGS will always bring more somewhat urban legend? :smile Seems very close to me.

Alrighty, but greysheet, is how much a dealer will pay...
People go nuts win they see PCGS, and automatically look at the PCGS price guide, and pay over that value, and think they did good..

 

In reality jim, at least in my case ( no pun intended ), the NGC is #2. PCGS consistantly outsells the NGC..., caveat: older NGC No-Line 'fatties' fly away like the old rattlers do.

ANACS are readily accepted, it does help if you have the old little whiteys tho, and ICG is a pariah.....to most DEALERS that is.

The smart consumer will ignore the plastic and buy the coin.

The prices realised that go above and beyond the PCGS price guide are for truly exceptional coins, those that border an upgrade and are sought out by the crackout artists, me included, but for the most part, for average coins, PCGS price guide is at the higher end of the retail level.

Most folks dp prefer the PCGS holder tho. That we agree on.

 

I prefer NGC for my morgans, and PCGS for my gold... That is just a personal preference for me, and if I can get the same coin in an ICG holder for $20 cheaper, I might do it, and see if it crosses over, you see, this is good for buying the coin and not the slab, and also helps to see if I can grade coins accurately.

 

I prefer NGC for all my coins because I don't really like kool-aid. The real reason is because I think the white insert shows toning better.

 

Yep, that is true
I think silver looks best in NGC
Gold looks best in PCGS
And toning looks GREAT in NGC holder
Sometimes it is just a preference of looks

 

In your opinion, what are some of the best and worst grading companies?
When I'm buying, the best grading companies are the ones that under-grade coins.
When I'm selling, the best grading companies are the ones that over-grade coins.


What is your opinion on having coins graded?
A good idea if you want to sell a coin, participate in the registry, or are concerned with the value/authenticity of the coin. Otherwise, I could take them or leave them.

 

Dont you guys have a problem with the new holders tho?I think they are a pain to take pics...otherwisem, no problem here.
