Charmy, I must really introduce you to RLM someday.....

As for coins, tonight I spent the majority of my time on you tube watching hot sauce videos and guitar players.

    Go figure.

I would love to meet RLM sometime, absolutely! And you are too funny - hot sauce videos! No offense to the hot sauce king, but to me that sounds like as much fun as watching a coin tone! But I could get into watching guitar players, definitely, especially if they're as cute as you when you sing and play guitar on a chair in in the middle of an authentic Mexican restaurant after a few beers and margaritas in the heart of Tucson after a busy coin show where we sold tons of coins!

Penny lady: I saw your booth at the Long Beach coin show several weekends ago. I browsed through your copper and was quite impressed with your selection. If I see you again at the next show, I will introduce myself.

Yes: I'm sure we are both thinking of the same seller, as there is only one on ebay that advertises his coins this way. I have bought two coins from him. One of them was an absolutely outstanding deal(a 1909 vdb for $25 that many on this board photo graded ms-65 to 66)....and the other was decent, but had some "concealed" markings that were somewhat bothersome. His prices seem very reasonable which is why I often consider him.

Anyways, I went with the PCGS certified one. It wasn't cheap at all, as a matter of fact I paid nearly full retail, but after comparing with other 45s on Heritage, it appears that it is "better than average" as far as strike was concerned. So I just played it safe as opposed to taking the chance with the raw coin.

    thanks for the inputs all.

Thank you, would love to meet you formally at the next show. I think you probably made a good choice since both coins seemed pretty close technically any way. Even though you paid a higher price for this coin, nice uncleaned problem free 1859's can be hard to come by since they are very popular for just the reason you wanted one! It seems like I sell more 1859's to type set collectors, than to Indian set collectors!

haha. yeah, I wouldn't even be considering one except for the fact that there is a big hole staring at me in my Dansco album that says "FILL ME". I do collect lincolns too, but mostly stick to circulated ones, though I've had a bit of an MPL itch lately.

I agree with AJ - the first coin may be a technical 40, but that is it. The pictures make the coin look flat and cleaned. Better pictures or coin in hand might make me change my mind. And the second coin makes the coin show good details and still has remaining luster. Good example of why you need good pictures if selling coins.

If my memory is correct, we have met, but mostly in passing - Long Beach last year.

Look at the crisp outline of the T on the PCGS one compared to the raw one the right end of the T no outline

It a weak strike not wear that caused the "T" to look like that.

either way the stronger strike looks nicer IMO

Mark, are you saying that you see luster on the PCGS certified coin pictured? This would be a nice bonus when I receive the coin if it had some luster, because I honestly didn't think it had any luster remaining. Where are you seeing luster in the photos?

    thanks,
    John

Just look at the two coins. The top is the flat one - compare the two surfaces. While the second coin is not MS quality I still see hints of what I expect copper-nickel indians. Granted it is very thin - but I think I see it towards the rims in the recesses. Just my opinion on what I see in the pictures. I wish I could take good pictures - I have an AU and MS 1861 graded by PCGS. I will try, but I make no promises it will work for side by side comparison.

I am not sure I am doing a good job of explaining what I am looking for, but here it goes - the two dark pictures reflect the actual coins. The top two are the AU58 and the second two are the MS63. The second picture of both was done under natural sunlight(or what there is here in Ky today). Look out from the center towards the rims you can see the luster there - to me the AU coins has luster, less than the 63 as it should be. I don't know if it helps or not. When I look at the second coin in you pictures and think about the lighting, I think I see some hidden luster out towards the rims and hidden in the devices. Just of course my opinion from the pictures - not the expert that others are.
