Just when you thought it was safe a new wave of Obama coins are hitting the market to "commemorate" his first 100 days in office. The following news article from the South Florida Carribean News reads like an ad: Fort Lauderdale based coin company offering President Obama collector coins You should get your order in early if you don't want to disappoint your descendants several generations from now. For only $39.90 (with S/H) you get $1.75 worth of coins with colorful stickers: a colorized 2003 Illinois Quarter a colorized Presidential Dollar a colorized 2008 Hawaii Quarter a colorized DC Quarter How could you resist such a great offer as this one? The company's web site states:
Hobo, what is your point? It clearly says they are highly sought after. I know why now. You have already bought several thousand of these, now starting rumors like "highly collectable" and "sought after", and then make a fortune on ebay on the ones you bought. I see what your doing. Only question is can I purchase tonight from the Hobo Obama Collection Hoard of Colorado?
There was a dealer at the MSNS show with a cpl rows of the Obama coins in one of his cases. I looked at him with pity and moved on.
Better sell 'em while they're hot. Don't wanna be stuck with them when the fad wears off. Remember Beanie Babies? Tickle Me Elmo? Cabbage Patch Kids? Pet Rocks?
we need a plan i dont want to end up like the gent who sold his colection midway? why dont u think of someway so we can get rich quick
It's not surprising that these things are coming out. This is a big deal to a lot of American's and whenever that happens, someone will commemorate it in anyway they can to make a dollar. I think it's terrible how they are ripping people off by calling these things collectible and valuable. But, that's the way it is.
Companies have always offered product to honor inaugurations. Some much better than others. Even as early as 1970, Franklin Mint struck some extremely high quality medallions for presidents. These are collectible and sell at premiums when found complete and perfect. Anything is a collectible if people buy it because they are interested in it or like the way it looks. Being a collectible has nothing to do with financial investment. That comparison alone ruins the hobby.
I am surprised that I have not seen any of the Lincoln commemorative dollars used ... I mean sold..... as an Obama thingy.
I think those are from National Collector's Mint. For the most part a junk marketing company. Though some of their minted items aren't bad. The Corvette Stand up coin is a neat NCLT and was minted for NC Mint by Mayer Mint in Germany. Good quality. I also have the original 2004 Freedom Tower Dollar from Northern Mariana Islands...just because of the controversey surrounding it. The Lincoln Cent Obama medals are made by Sunshine Mint for NC Mint. A silver version is available as an upsell.
Not a big fan here of color coins unless the theme and design are outstanding. Danbury Mint did a set of National Parks Panels with the mint stamp and a colorized Silver Eagle...IMO that was a nice looking set with lots of color. Not just some photoshop job of Obama from public photos.
I agree that there have been some nice privately minted medallions to commemorate such events in the past...but this is not the case here. This company is taking a normal US mint quarter and applying a sticker to it and calling it a commemorative.
The FM product was a half-dollar for $8.95. I would consider that a cheap product and would have low expectations for it. It was actually a Morgan Mint product using the Franklin Mint name...since they now own Franklin Mint. Its also some type of fired decal combo screen printing. Not a sticker that can be removed. There have been cases where the decals weren't fired properly and chipped off.
There are only TWO official Obama medallions. The official inaugural medal and the "challenge coin" issued by the inaugural committee. The DNC issued one as well, and there were a number of unofficial ones that were sold as souveniers at various places around washington last January. All the rest are Bunk and Junk. (except maybe the official US mint "peace medal" which isn't out yet.)
