Hone your grading skills - 1901 IHC

It has more luster than the picture shows. My guess is MS something. What do you think?

I'm not to good with smaller coins, but I would say if it's UNC I would go at least ms64 or 65. I see very few marks. That is one very nice looking coin. :thumb:

 

I agree 64/65 bn based off the pictures. Very nice coin.

 

I think that is a solid 65 and it would not astound me if it got a 66. That is a real nice clean coin.

 

This is a very nice coin. There is wear on the obverse above the 01 in the tips of the features and also @ 1:30 - 2:30 O'Clock in the features. This coin has been weak struck or the photo's do not do it any justice as apparent on the rim of the obverse right side. I will have to go AU58 on this one. I will be ducking after this grade.

I would opinion that a first glance, one might see a high end MS. I'm going to go the other way, AU to low end MS for the very reason's GD and tpsad stated.

 

Well don't know if others are seeing it, but I think I see wear on the hair below the ear..
Seems like an AU63 slider to me...
AU58, wonder what the grade is?

 

I would go with AU 55 there apears to be some wear on the reverse shield high points, and to me there's not that much mint luster left on this coin

The obverse seems to be problem free looks like a split grade coin to me 61/55. The lower grade always wins which is a AU55 .

There's no such grade as an AU63 tmoneyeagles

The whole AU63 concept, is an AU coin that looks good enough to be a MS coin. Lemme' find that thread

This coin could be a candidate for an AU64...
You might have never heard of AU63 or AU64, but you do know that some AU coins look better than uncirculated coins.

 

That;s really taking the grading system out of context:hammer:What, an uncirculated coin is an uncirculated coin an Au coin is an Au coin and that;s it.I like the joke whoever came up with this theory is not well. .

FWIW, and since I think that I'm one of the biggest users of the AU63 / AU64 term, here's what I mean by it.

A coin called an AU 63 coin is what I would call a "slider". It's a coin that is really a nice 58 that the TPGs will likely market graded MS 63 (or 64) but could also grade AU 58.

Yes you use the term a lot, but I'm trying to think of the person like me, who searched for AU63 and looked for Lehigh's thread, and it was actually AU64.. lol
Yes mike I know how you use it, and it makes total sense to me

 

The grading system is confusing enough to the novices ,and to label these coins like the TPGs did is totally ridiculous on my part I don't like the TPGS grading system anyway just my opinion.

You won't find that in the ANA grading system which I use
