It's real, but it is also heavily cleaned and damaged. I wouldn't even bother considering it if I were you.

Yep. Heavily cleaned. Dropped I see also, those heavy ones are vulnerable.

As already mentioned, it looks excessively cleaned and polished. It's called the "Braided Hair" large cent. It was the last U.S. large cent. It was then followed by the Flying Eagle Cent, the first small cent. If you like this Braided Hair design, there are LOTS of it in nicer condition and much cheaper prices on eBay.

@Amberlarry22, if you're in the market for decent braided hair large cent. Might I suggest an evenly circulated 1851? You shouldn't have all that much trouble finding that particular date.

Heavily heavily polished, I would list it for $5 (((OBO))). Unless it's some kind of variety which I'm sure it isn't.

On the 2x2 he has written "slant 5" but I'm not aware of a slanted 5 variety for 1853. In fact every 1853 is a slanted 5.
1855 has a straight and slanted 5s, and 1856 has a straight and slanted 5s but not 1853.

The whole thing looks like a scam on the unknowing. A problem coin and hopeing a novice looks at it and sees slanted 5 on the 2x2 looks it up and sees the other dates and jumps on it. And relies later it's cleaned and polished and slanted 5 is normal for it.

No reason for that to be on the 2x2 unless he wants you to see that lol.

    No. Just no.

In the cleaned condition this coin is in, retail would be in the $10 to $15 range at best.
