I have several pieces of Japanese currency from the 30's and 40's (this is not military or occupation currency). Is there a guide book out there where I can identify what years they are? Thanks.
There are 85 pages of pictures and descriptive information about Japanese paper currency from its earliest use to the currently circulating money in the 2009 edition of the Japanese Numismatic Dealers Association (JNDA) catalog. Used earlier editions are frequently available on eBay; Scott Seman usually has the current edition for somewhere around $25; and you might also find it at Amazon, Alibris or Abe Books. If you don't have a huge number, you could post them here and I'll tell you what the JNDA says about them.
NICE post hontonai!!! I will be picking up that book shortly :thumb: I will go with whats been said. For a large amount of notes, it might serve you better to pick upthe book. If you only have a few, post some pics Heck.. even if you pick up the book - post some pics of your favorites i know alot of us would love to see them lol

Help? Hey guys, I was doing a little research online when I came across this thread. I've attached a couple of pictures of the collection I have and would love to hear anything you could tell me about these notes such as printing dates, any interesting information and of course value (if any). Thanks, Scott A 50 Sen note, I was told dated 1937. A little worn but not in bad shape. I have 4 of these 5 Yen notes, all from what looks like the {81} series in perfect condition, no folds, no creases nice and crisp. I have 7 of these 10 Yen notes, most from the {303} series but also {219} and {225}. 4 are in nearly perfect condition, no folds or creases, 2 have small corner folds and the 7th looks like it was tacked to someones bulletin board at one time. This last one is obviously German but if any one can tell me what it is I really appreciate it. I have Hi-res pictures of the backs as well but didn't want to take up to much room posting them as well. If you'd like to see them PM me and I'll send you the link. Thanks again.
i will have to see if i can look up the info on these notes a bit later... but to post liks of pics use this format: [u-r-l= www.yourlink.com] some text [-/-u-r-l-] without the dashes
Values given are based on the 2009 JNDA catalog for notes in the pictured condition: 50 sen - Government note (Fuji-Sakura), JNDA#11-60, Showa 13-23 (6/1/38-8/31/48), ¥200 (~$2.16). There were 1633 "groups" printed. I'm not sure, but I believe there are normally 1,000,000 notes per group. ¥5 - Bank of Japan (2nd Sugahara), JNDA#11-50, Showa 17-21 (1/6/42-3/2/46), ¥6-7,000 (~$64.54-75.30), 96 groups. ¥10 - Bank of Japan 2nd Wake (pronounced Waa-kay), JNDA#11-52, Showa 18-21 (12/5/43-3/2/46), ¥350-5,000 (~$3.76-53.80) depending on condition, and paper stock. At some point an "improved paper" was used so your higher group numbers may be on that paper. Of 480 groups printed, the number on each paper is unlisted. If any of your ¥10 notes have red serial numbers but otherwise match the one posted, they are Bank of Japan 3rd Wake, JNDA#11-55, Showa 19-21 (11/20/44-3/2/46), ¥500-11,000 (~$5.38-118.39). Groups 481-533, also without breakdown of paper types. Other than the information on the face of the 1908 German Imperial Reichsbank 100 mark note I know nothing about it, and have no references listing it.
