I may as well join this "Mockery" of a thread!

With such a rarity, would it not be a simple process to verify the population increase with the major grading companies? With this being such a rare coin, it should be easily accounted for.

The one possible event of him actually having these and selling them to a private entity is entirely possible, therefore keep them off market for price stability! There are a lot of people in this World that have a ton of Money and these would be considered pocket change to them.

What is the difference between how Pupa has posted and lets say as an example of what I post? Have any of you ever seen my "alleged collection"?

How do any of you know that I am for real and have what I say I have?
I suppose it all comes down to credibility....anyone can copy and post an image!
Some people simply do not like to do so....perhaps he was one of them?

The one difference I suppose between my example mentioned above, is that I would be willing to display my meager collection at a National Show...however as incomplete as it is, it would be some what embarrassing to do so!

    Regards,

Now let's really look at this silliness one more time for the heck of it.
Jaceravone brings up a really good point. He may have actually had a roll of 16-D. It has happened. Old timers did pluck these out of circulation.
The key word being circulation. So let's say he had a roll of circulated coins. Let's call them G-VG.

Let's play with the math now. Let's say he got $1,000 each for them. $50,000 a nice chunk of change. How many houses can one build with that?

Let's go to the other extreme. It WAS a BU roll. All were slabbed and came back as MS65FB by PCGS.
Let's say he got $50,000 per coin. That's $2.5 million. This would mean the average cost per house was just under $139K. He bought the land and built the houses. Sure he did.

Gonna need a crew to do that aren't you folks? You know lots of trades involved in building a house. They don't come cheap and have a tendency to want to get paid for their efforts.
I could go on to some lengths about this having been in the trades.

How about another tidbit. If 50 Gem 16-D Mercs suddenly hit the market dealers will know. They have their own networks. I know, we are on them at work and they stretch all over the country. Factor in large auction houses like Heritage while you're at it. There would be a big buzz amongst dealers. Funny I never heard a word about this hoard at work.

Doesn't matter how you slice it. Story is so full of holes it looks like a sponge.

Nice try Pupa but not planned out very well.

Well Rickie, we can just take your word
The people that have the most credibility, are the ones that have been around longest, or have helped out most, or have just been here
People lose credibility, by pulling crap like this, if he would have taken a picture, of himself, and the roll, and the roll itself, it would have been all good
It is obvious that he never had any of these coins..
I believe you have a collection, because you are a member who helps others consistently, and you seem to always want to know as much as you possibly can, to help others.
Rickie, if you want to lose credibility, post a thread titled, "Found perfect $5 chief note, serial numbered 1, off to COSTA RICA!"
    :D LOL!

    Joking.... :D
Well, clebmo you are 100% right on the money... Story has way too many holes, to make sense, and you just exploited them :high5:

Thank you Clembo for taking the time to type what I've been thinking all along. It would be very unlikely for all of those Mercs to be MS65FB. But even if they were, they wouldn't buy 18 houses and a bunch of land. New houses at that.

you know, I was just thinking...

besides the fact that pupa might have been dak, or any one of other fun scenarios, let's ponder this:

A man is given at the reading of a will, a roll of 1916-D dimes that were carefully put away by his grandmother through the years, he flips as he starts to count his inheritance not knowing...

that most 16-Ds encountered are counterfeit!!! muahahahaha! His brothers and sisters and cousins got cash, he did too, a $5 roll of dimes!!! Now THAT would be justice!!!!

So, this thread got dragged up again. I had made up my mind, long ago, that this story was nothing but a fabrication designed to get everyones dander up. While I'll concede it is not completely impossible, it is quite improbable. I do believe that the coin dealers hot line would be alerted if these hit the market, legal or black market.

Because I collected Mercs since I was young I still dream of owning a 1916 D, the last I need for the set.

Funny you should mention the dealer part Bruce. My boss is basically computer illiterate but a few of us there aren't. My coworker does all that work and it is all printed for my boss to read. He reads a lot.

I rarely mention forums that I hang out on but did mention this one today. Told him how I had laid down the math.
First I mentioned the possibility of a roll of circulated 16-D being hoarded. He responded "I'd like to see them".
Then I filled him in about the 18 houses and how I did the math assuming these were MS65FB. His response? It would kill the market and dealers would know. Hey, he's only been at it for 42 years so how would he know?

    Clembo:
I fully agree with your assessment about the MS-65 FSB's.
But, if they were just circs, they would have no impact. Even F-12's would not effect the market.

    remember the NYC Subway hoard?
They had over 250 1916 D's all circ and they sold off in no time.
[Littleton purchased them and parcelled them out.]

But 50 circs wouldn't allow the original poster to buy 18 houses...

    I'm still calling shenanigans...
