as futile as i belive it to be, I'm asking all my fellow members to keep an eye peeled for my stolen 44d steel cent, previously shown in the error coins forum. (And sparked quite a debate) It was stolen by a traveling bullion buyer to whom I brought it for an offer to be made. I don't know what else to do, so here I am. any raw or newly submitted coin like it is to be investigated. I know it may not have been real, but apparently it was clever enough to inspire someone to steal it right from under my nose. Any tips greatly appreciated and can be sent to me in a PM or directly reported to: Sgt. John Backman St. Louis Cty. Sheriff's office 8586 Enterprise Dr. S. Mt. Iron, MN 55768 Or call him at 218-748-7574 I sincerely appreciate any help, and will give $50 (not much but all I can give right now) to anyone whose info. leads to the return of my coin. Please look for the appropriately titled thread in error coins for pics of specific specimin. This is the greatest let down in my 15 year numismatic experience. Thanks all.
Just so the others know what you are talking about, I assume this is the coin http://www.cointalk.com/forum/t38891-3/#post393152
I put the word out to my friends so hopefully they'll do the same and they'll do the same and so on and so on. I hope you recover it! :thumb: I have something similar and if someone stole it, even if it isn't authentic, I'd be pee'd so I can feel your pain! Ribbit
Id love to see a picture of this coin. If its available can we post it in this thread? Any identifying marks to help distinguish it from the others? I will keep my eyes peeled on ebay in the event it surfaces.
I posted a warning to others on them in the bullion buying thread... they are the "Treasure Hunter's Roadshow" pic of business card attatched. The guy was just talking to me and I, like a fool, looked him in the eyes instead of watching his HANDS... which he kept below and behind the table, obscuring them from my view. I called that to his attention several times, but just figured he didn't realize he was doing it. They went from my locked box to his table, then back into the locked box. There was such a line of people waiting to get ripped off they hurried me into being careless, but it's my own fault. I should have checked them all super close before leaving, instead of back at the bank when putting them in there. It was there that I realized it was gone, and the next day before I could get under cover sheriffs to execute a search warrant (in front of the waiting people). By then it was gone, the sheriffs saying he probably mailed it somewhere obscure immediately. After IDing the "expert" who looked at my most prized possessions, I find out he's a convicted conman, with offenses already this year! I feel so stupid!!!
Wow. You knew it could be worth about 100K but didn't have the money to send it in. That kind of money and it's still raw after almost a year?
Well, times have been unusually tough for me the last year and a half or so. Girlfriend is going to have a baby in Dec. Most people did say it was fake and honest people, knowing its worth, didn't want to touch it. I wanted to sell it... if the offer was right. Never again!
If it was a $100,000 coin, selling it at a local dealer, craigslist, flea market, whatever is not how you go about doing it.
Reminds me of a saying: "a fool and his money are easily parted". Apologies for the harshness of my remark. But it's the truth. Even if the dealer didn't steal it, what's the most he would have offered, $10k? Would you have accepted 1/10 of its potential value? If the answer is "no", then it was foolhardy to basically hand some travelling sideshow freak a tiny item worth that much. The way to go about it would be to pay for a subscription to PCGS and send it in via Registered mail. If I was fortunate enough to have found one, you better believe that's what I'd do. Even if there was a 10% chance of it being real, I'd still send it in because the potential reward far outweighs the cost.
Except!!!!! What if you sent it in and your little prize becomes a surprise and vanishes....not big on JUST SENDING IT IN..........:rolling:......you should never - never let it leave your site....IMO
Yeah. If I win the Mega Millions Lottery, am I gonna send the ticket in? NO WAY! I'm gonna take off work and drive it to wherever it needs to go! If I'm selling my 1944 steel cent, I'm going to drive it to PCGS headquarters! Joe
I have shipped and been shipped $100K plus coins many times... which even if this piece was real it is prob not worth $100k. You can insure your items with companies like fed ex... and if it doesn't show up, your covered.
