My first guess was XF-40. It isn't a bad coin but it certainly doesn't appear almost uncirculated to me. If it graded at AU or higher, I need to send a bunch of coins for slabbing.

I think Doug is the closest to actual grade, but the thread is "What did PCGS grade this coin?" so I answered with them in mind, and said at that time that I think that they tend to overgrade key dates.

Hey thanks LD. I felt like I was in pause mode in an Indiana...jones movie. hehe. I noticed they didn't note "scratched"... is that truly a scratch or metal flow ?

I wanted to give it a couple of days for everyone to get their thoughts in.

I said AU58... I thought I was going to be surprised, and reading everybody else's thoughts, I kinda am!
Nice coin, and glad it graded nicely as well

nice call rlm. There was one other that did agree with you before the grade was posted:

    while I originally said:

I think I had agreed with you if you read my comment, tho I didn't exactly say AU-50, so I can't take total credit, but I also think that Doug and I were also the only ones to say that it's scratched and therefore shouldn't be in a PCGS holder. Oops... Bruce said so too, and I quoted it in my own thread!!! DOH!!

OK Dutchman, now you tell us what you think about the coin as you apparently don't agree with the assigned grade. Otherwise why would you think we would be surprised.

ah' ha! why didn't I think to ask that question. You were probably a quick change artist in another life too GD.

I think it's a nice XF that got blessed into an AU holder.

The mark on the back is not nearly as apparent as the picture makes it out to be.

My first impression was AU53 because of the remaining luster, but when you stated that we would be surprised by the grade I thought PCGS called it MS. Honestly though, I am not good at grading circulated coins. I don't really collect them.

so PCGS evidently didn't consider it "scratched" ?

I apologize Ruben, you also noticed the damage and called on it!

I don't even think the mark is that bad...
That coin is a nice one to have, and you should be proud :thumb:

I still think it is in no way better than an EF45, or even a 40. I posted some MS examples from heritage. I might change my mind if I saw it in hand but the real expert here on these is Bill and he has been MIA for a few weeks.
