I'd say EX-45 and that's market graded for the date , but just a guess , too much dirt toning ) on the surface to tell from a picture.

IMO AU 50. Rubs, weakness of strike takes away from overall attractiveness of this coin. Also, the scratch on the wing on the reverse.

EF-40. If it got better it won't sell for that price.

    I'm going to say VF-35/XF-40. ;)

    Nice coin! :thumb:

well call me crazy , but they may not be a "scratch" on that wing , rather a late die flaw.

"flaw" as in a die imperfection I really give myself a good laugh at myself alot of times.

First, I want to say Hi to Ruben, good to see you posting here again. I hope everything is getting better with your family.

Camaro,I think that the coin is scratched, but it's an internet photo, so I can't really say. The fact that it is scratched is enough to body bag it. I think that the top TPGs tend to be much more lenient (read overgrade) many key date coins. This is in a PCGS slab and my guess is that PCGS graded it AU-53.

I also agree that the coin should have been body-bagged. On a coin the size of a quarter that scratch on the wing is more than enough to bag a coin.

As for grade, yes, the coin was weakly struck, but there is no way that I am going to believe that the flat spots on that coin - the head, legs, legends and even the date; leading edges of the wings, wing tips & breast - are due entirely to weak strike. I would grade this coin no better than VF35 details, damaged, net VF25.

Now I can't wait to hear what PCGS said.

So I think I speak for all of us, when I say I wanna know the grade of the coin!
You said it is shocking or surprising or something like that in the original post :D
I want to know how shocked I'll be! :D

    The suspense is killing me.

When I first looked at the coin I thought it was a raised mark and not a scratch. So, I went with it being some kind of a die defect. But, now that I look at it again...I may have been wrong. If it is indeed a scratch, I can see what the BB idea is coming from.

Yes thats what I was thinking as well. LD really didn't refer to it as a "scratch"

Well , when we get the PCGS results , some maybe correct , some may be wrong and some of us may learn something we didn't know. It's always a good thing to know what you didn't know.:smile
