This series, with its wildly varied strikes, seems to get many coins graded downward for a weak strike. I suspect this coin is a higher grade, technically, then was netted down for the weak strike. Tangentally, this is also a good example to contrast to the Washington Quarter posted in another thread -- where rarely do you see net grades down for strike. All IMO...Mike
p.s. this kind of strike is not at all uncommon for the series. you may know that the design was changed to the IHC in part because of the difficulty in striking these coins fully.
p.p.s. if ever there was a series that calls out for a "fully struck" designation, this one is it. Finding a fully struck example is a real challenge. Look around and tell me how many you can see that are completely struck up. A fully struck gem mint state FEC is a rare coin indeed.
The luster is unbroken there, that is why I posted this coin as a "guess the grade", it is a tricky coin.
But you can see luster on them as flat as they are. This is the difference between weakly struck and wear. Beginners should pay attention to what is said in this thread, it's very valuable.
There's lite wear on the eagles upper feathers i don't think it's a weak strike that's the high points of the coin were it wears first like i said an AU58 is still my guess. The coin still has most of it's luster to it but to me it does't look like an MS grade at all JC
