So with the stoppage of 2009 nickles and dimes, Which mint sets will be the biggest hits this year. The clad proof, silver proof or unc? I'm guessing the best way to get p&d dimes and nickles the unc set would be the best bet, so a good seller. I only order one set each year but I might up that this year.

think of all the coins in the past 100 years that had low mintages... what happened to those coins? Most were then hoarded by the public.. and its those coins which usually carry the lowest prices... why? because there is such a large supply from everyone hoarding them.

I, like everyone else, will keep any i come across... but i doubt they will fetch the large premium alot of folks think they will.

I'm pretty sure the unc set is going to be Satin Finish again so the coins in the set will be different from business strikes. I plan on getting a proof and unc set this year just because of the copper cents.

I agree! I am getting Mint sets purely for the cents, and I would pad that order, but understand that they are NOT business strikes, but special satin finish SMS coins.

Jon is spot on too about the hoarding of any modern coin by the public. All low mintages do is encourage hoarding and keep the value low due to the availability in high grades.

I knew that they were not circulating business strikes sorry, I should have said that . but I cant even find one let alone a pair from each mint. I agree with the penny thought because if im correct that will be the only way to get the copper cents. there should not be hoarding, we should remeber our childhood lessons and share.

I think all the mint sets will be hits . . . because 2009 is such a unique year. Not only are there an unprecendented 18 coins, but a whopping 15 of those coins have designs that are unique to 2009 and will never appear again.

Now, just because they are hits (high demand, imho) doesn't mean that they will appreciate in value much. Value relates to demand _and_ supply. And if the mint makes a ton of them (like, ahem, the LP2 sets), there will be plenty of supply, and things will even out, hoarders will get plenty, and the price won't appreciate a whole lot.

(I'll also add: I don't think the shortage of business strike nickels or dimes will have much effect on the mint sets. I suspect _most_ people will end up filling their 2009 nickel and dime holes with business strike coins they will get eventually).
