I've got to say. I ordered a sample slab from DGS and have looked at the website and I am quite impressed. Now I have some better date/grade coins that I'd like to get into slabs for insurance purposes and I have decided that when they get submitted it is going to be to DGS. In my mind after looking at their site you can't go wrong for the price and I like the pics of the coins online.
This was exactly the reason why I stated the holder should be changed. Not everyone will differentiate DGS from PCI because of the holder. IMO, DGS can't afford to have anyone thinking that PCI=DGS. Without a holder change, that is exactly what will happen and then PCI's poor reputation will detrimentally affect DGS's effort to build a solid reputation. I know that changing the holder involves significant costs, but the damage in reputation by not changing the holder might prove to be more costly.
As a toolmaker, a plastic injection mold of 8 cavities ( 4 slabs / two parts per slab) would cost about $150,000 or more......a large but not huge investment. I agree. Lose the holder. I finally sold a matched set of PCI MS-68 ( yeah right ) 1943 PDS Lincolns, they were as nice as any NGC-66's I have sold and went for a huge discount only because of the holder....any reholdering would have killed the profit/price.
That is because they are two completely different grading companies. PCI has no affiliation with DGS. The only commonality is the holder. Given PCI's poor reputation and DGS goal to build a solid reputation, that commonality is potentially fatal to DGS IMO.
You know, you're right, I didn't read all of the way through the thread, PCI is gone, and DGS simply uses the same plastic tomb. I like the improvements that they made, but... Personally, and I am sure that many feel this way and won't express it, but I would never buy a PCGS graded coin from David Hall Rare Coins nor would I ever buy a coin in a DGS graded holder as a graded coin simply because, by their own admission, 10% of their coins come from DLRC, IMHO a HUGE conflict of interest.
However the coins submitted from DLRC have an indicator letter in the serial number I believe so you know they were from DLRC.
no, I didn't know that, and I am afraid that insiders to the coin business may be the only people that do. Most laymen will be completely unaware, and they are the people who benefit most from a graded slab!
hi here are two of five coins i sent in to dominion im new to the forum here. but i have tryied the others and there to slow(over two months and over priced(200 for 5 coins ) and i have had problems with a few . dominion was fast around 2 weeks and priced far (87 for five coins) and i think graded them right you can look and judge for your selfs i even had a question and mike ellis answered me himself i like them a++ thanks co
glad you posted your coins, shameless. The personalized label and the attributions are nice- is there an extra fee for that?
the fee is actually $2.00 per coin. Check here for pricing. http://www.dominiongrading.com/submissionCenter.cfm Richard
Welcome Shameless to the forum. I am fuzzy on your statement and I wonder if it was different grade than expected or cleaned, questionable color, etc. This might indicate tighter standards than DGS. I would have graded the AU50 example in the XF range myself. The pricing is not far from NCG pricing for varieties ( PCGS is a little extreme), and DGS statement on variety designation would concern me. "Note: Variety specialists may disagree on some designations and the variety attributions cannot be guaranteed." Jim
hi desertgem and thank you for the welcome the color could the pic itself . as far as the other companys i had a coin attributied wrong and it was a nightmare to get it fixed but they where wrong . and i have done alot of reading on forums about grading companys and it really is confusing but my reason and it just mine i fill comfortable with dgs is the people they have grading for them . i know for sure mike ellis graded this because he emailed me about them and i do understand grading is a opinion and thats probably what that statment means i guess.so thats all i can really say im happy with there service i just sent out 8 more coins, 2 1917 ddo,4 41 ddo #2,83 ddo#1,36 ddo#2. that im having mr daughtry do the 17 and 83 in there sig series. thanks and glad to be here shameless
Do you have some photos of the '17 DD before they were sent in? Easier to see than in a holder. Almost everything is an opinion about grading :smile including color and surfaces and if you find a TPG service that you trust, that is a good thing. Since you have multiples, it might be that you accummulate errors like I do, or if you intend to sell the extras, you might consider crossing them to NCG or PCGS if they are higher grades as the selling price for those would be worth the expense of re-slabbing. thanks Jim
i look through my photos i think i do but yes i collect errors not for resale any time soon. im hoping to leave them to my duaghter is my plan but plans do change some times . im more looking to get them preserved and verifide for when that day comes my daughter won't think it's a penny and roll it up and stick in her bank account lol!! ill look for the pics and see if i have not deleted them. you'll have to share some of the stuff you have found would love to see it . thanks co
I haven't had anything slabbed by them yet, but based on the pictures and internet comments I've seen they are spot on at grading. Their Lincoln grades are 100% accurate IMO. DGS is going to be a great grading company!
