I really, really thought this coin was an F12, lowest VG-10. At least they (like NGC) couldn't detect my little secret. Anyone see the spot of obverse verdigris I removed?
That coin is definitely not a F12. I guess I could see VG10, but my grade would be the same as ANACS. Spot? South of the "LIBERTY"?
I agree with rlm that it is a VG-10 tops. I think ANACS is really tightening the screws on their grading. It's good as a buyer, but not so much for the seller/submitter...
The reverse does it in for me. I'd say ANACS was generous on this one. But, then again, I'm kind of hard to please.
I think VG8 is the right grade... The wheat stalks, and jaw, are not in enough good detail to be in F, and are worn. What stalks show signs of a VG10 maybe, but the spots, nicks, and overall wear on the coin bring it down I think VG8 was a good grade for the coin, and I think ya' should be proud of this coin
I think that the ANACS VG 8 is right on. There are minimal details on the wheat stalks. The cheek and jaw are worn smoothe. I gotta say they got it right on this coin without the expected upgrade some TPGs give to key & semi-key coins. I've had some coins graded by ANACS to make sure they were genuine and they graded them as I thought they should have been. Bruce
Just to give you a little perspective, does anyone want to guess the grade of this coin? Obviously, based solely on the wheat lines.
Based upon my experiences with ANACS since they changed ownership, they've REALLY tightened the screws on grading. I suspect they are trying to improve their rating in the greysheet and the numismatic community in general.
Nope because that wheat looks clearly like weak strike versus wear. I was thinking vg-10 for the original coin.
I'm agree with the grading of the coin. VG8 looks right to me. I'm going to say this coin is an extremely weak strike. It almost appears to be some luster around the devices. I could see this coin being an AU despite the wheat stalks being so poor.
After I posted this last night I spent about an hour on ha.com, the grade is consistent with other ANACS VG's I saw. Thanks for the opinions everyone!
I also think ANACS got it correct. I guessed a VG-8 before seeing the grade. It is a "nice" VG-8 though. The coin doesn't seem to have any major dings or scratches with a pretty good rim. Also, you can sort of make out the wheat lines.
