This "Commission of Fine Arts" has gotta be bogus. The design they recommended is the least imaginative and least artistic of all.

On the plus side, there are automatic grading points built in for future reference: Bottom stripes clearly defined. No wear in the star field. Etc.

The reverse will look particularly ugly after the high points wear down to near flat. It'll look like a sandwich someone took a bite out of.

 

Of course they will pick the ugliest one...

I'd rather have an american flag, than a shield...
Although I liked the eagle's, that they had brought forth, those were kinda neat
I like this design, but it is not the best they could have done, but it is well worth collecting... I'm just hoping for a low mintage maybe... But who am I kidding they will mint millions of these, just making them about as collectible as a log cabin penny

 

Huh? AFAIK there was no other flag being considered.

 

I believe the Commission on Fine Arts is an advisory panel only. They have a long history of recommending odd designs.

I think the Union Shield would have fit in with the theme of perserving the Union. But Heraldy is lost on most of the public today.

All in all, could have been worse I suppose.

I don't think you understand the concept :hammer:. This reverse is meant to be the new design from 2010 until they discontinue the cent, whenever that is. It isn't a one year type or limited edition.

That it is not possible for this to be a low mintage horde-friendly money-making coin, since it is meant for general circulation with mintages not in the millions, but the billions.

I'm just going to go ahead and quote myself!
When I say millions, I don't mean 2 million, I meaning right around, or a little less for what they are doing this year from the 2009 pennies.

 

I agree they should at least go with a waving flag instead of that stagnant one. Whatever they choose, it's bound to be better than a front on profile of a building that looks like a trolly car.

The flag is an American icon...a symbol of our country. If it is to be represented, especially on something as widely circulated as the cent, it should be represented properly. Even in concept, that flag should be representing our country in its entirety. That means fifty stars to represent the fifty Republics and Commonwealths that comprise this Union, not thirty-four.

You may take this as nitpicking, but I am dead serious. The rest I have to say about this travesty is too political to continue here, but to say the least, I am appalled and disgusted.

I could understand if there were 36 as thats how many states were in the union when Lincoln took office. I have to assume the 34 is due to space restrictions.
