It would appear that what we have here is the rare 8 Stars Left, and 7 Stars Right dollar dated 1797. All on a special lightweight planchet. This piece is so rare that the 8/7 star configuraton is not documented in any reliable numismatic source book.:whistle::whistle::whistle:

The seller calls our attention to the lightweight planchet and attributes that shortcoming to a difference between 1796 and 1797. He also encourages us to bid with our heart. Good idea, because anyone with a brain will see through this scam. ;)

OK, all you Bust Dollar experts, should we report this guy? Or, :D wait and see who bids?

    Report it. I just did.

As you mentioned, there are no 1797 dollars with 8 stars left. There were only two obverse dies; #1 had 9 stars on the left side, #2 had had 10 stars left.

This is clearly a counterfeit. I didn't need a book to see that, but I did consult one to be sure.

    Throw down. Throw down hard.

Thanks for the heads up, penny guy !

As my user name suggests I'm not a dollar collector, I do have a 1799 in my type set, but this just jumped off the screen at me.

I don't know if the seller is just uninformed, or a bad researcher, or ????

I tend to think the latter. :)

Well, as of this AM the listing is still active. So much for EBay's interest in running fair auctions. But, I guess that isn't really new news is is?

Sure would hate to see someone get taken on this.

Looks like someone got scammed into buying a Chinese fake and now they are trying to recoup their money.

    Maybe.

Judging by the poor grammar, this is not a native English speaker. I think this person is directly in cahoots with the counterfeiters in China; s/he's merely their rep on this side of the pond.

    I could be wrong.

Just got a EBay customer service survey. What fun. I gave the highest possible ratings for my interaction with the EBay employee I spoke with. They were very good.

In the free form response section I noted that EBay has taken no action on my complaint and there for must be endorsing the listing of known fradulent merchandise. I told them if someone bids and wins this replica coin I would offer to testify that EBay had been informed well in advance that the coin listed was a copy.

On the section of the online reporting I noted that they do not allow enough space to provide the references that prove the coin is a copy.

Stand by for a EBay response.........(clock ticking sound)

If you go to the link they have specifically for reporting fraudulent coin auctions they give you 10,000 characters. Just how wordy are you? :)

I was thinking that exact same thing but didn't say anything because I didn't want to come off as racist or anything. It was late and i was tired and who knows what would have come out of my mouth. But exactly what I was thinking.

I am very particular about looking at someone's grammer. If they can't take the time to type everything out correctly and sound articulate, then what other things are they messing up on. Anyway, better shut up now.
