Don't really know much about them, but doesn't seem like a good idea.

I've actually heard some very good things about DGS. Plus their grading fees are much cheaper then PCGS, or NGC. But I agree their slabs, probably wont sell for as much as say a PCGS one, but it's the coin that counts.

Might save some money to buy a nice coin in a DGS slab, and maybe crossover at PCGS :D
The coin that counts, yes, and buy the coin, not the slab.. But DGS???

From what I've seen. DGS is doing quite a good job of grading coins.

That doesn't answer the OP's question -- as it seems to be a questionable decision to slab a high-value coin in a new-fangled TPG's holder. To wit, I suspect the coins were 'owned by the house' as they say...>Mike

Would make sense, if they were affiliated with DGS... Or board...
But if they were not... OH NO NO NO! For rare coins, it is worth the extra money, to send it into PCGS

Tmoneyeagles, Your blind allegiance to TPGs will cost you a lot of money unless you gain the requisite grading skills. We might have to call you Tbrokeeagles if you're not careful. ;) ....Mike

    Well, here is my point..
If you have a RARE coin, worth grading, why not get it graded by the best?

    Define best.

I'd say PCGS, due to personal preference, for gold coins, although getting it graded by NGC would be okay too.
If the coin were cleaned, or polished, or from jewelry, I'd say ANACS would be a good place to send it to, so they can give you a MS___ Details grade.

No, don't tell me what TPG you think is best, tell me how you define the "best" TPG. In other words, how does one judge which TPG is "better" than another?...Mike

    Okay, alrighty...
What do you want me to say, won't we all say the same thing?
If DGS was advertised more, they would be on of the best...Or if they were older, they might be one of the best...
PCGS and NGC, and ANACS have been around longer, number one, so they are better known, and have had a longer time, to grade coins, since being founded
If DGS had the money to spend, they could be all over the internet, and be at special coin shows, but they are not a big money company yet
The grading process might be about the same, and you might get the same grade at PCGS than at DGS, but which one will net you better resale money, and which one would you like to have in your collection?
I'd want PCGS and NGC coins in my collection, not DGS

Sorry, but they will not cross over. Read the descriptions. Everyone is a problem coin. The only thing PCGS will say is genuine. NGC will bag it.

Ahhh, nice detective work :D lol
Well with that in mind, I'm stumped...
I wonder if ANACS would say the same...

I am curious if you can give a reason why NOT to? Have you or someone you know had a bad experience with them? Have they been under investigation for something? Do their standards grossly deviate from the Photograde standard which they claim to grade by? Just curious...

Yes, somebody on this board actually had a bad experience with them. Coin upside down, kept for a long time, and labeled coin wrong... that doesn't sound professional to me..
My question to anybody here, that would send their coins in to DGS, is why would you???

It has been said over and over again. Buy the coin, not the plastic.

It seems to me that you are more concerned with name and fashion than actual content. Does it matter that a coin is entombed, but contains problems? Absolutely not. Barring cracking the coin out of its shell, tell me exactly how there could be a problem selling or buying a coin that states specifically on the holder the problems that exist on the coin if that is the market you are in? Obviously, if you do not collect coins that have any derogatory aspects, you would not be in the market for such a coin to begin with, so the name on the slab is a moot point to begin with.

PCGS has been investigate by the government before for certain business practices. DGS never hid the fact that they were Daivd Lawrence Rare Coins. Not too much different from the origins of PCGS with David Hall. I am really curious if there is a specific reason you believe DGS is not a valid option for grading gold.

My thing is, and this will be other people's responses on this too.
They are not good for re sale purposes...
You think the buyers out there will pay the same premiums on graded coins, by DGS, than PCGS...If this is the case, and you are one of these people, I'm going to get my coins graded by DGS, I am going to buy high grade raw morgans, get them graded, and sell them all to you, if you like this company so much. I'll buy some raw quarter eagles, and get them graded as well, and if you are willing to pay the same amount for a MS62 DGS, as you are a MS62 PCGS, be my guest :)
I'll be making profits all day :)

If any of you are 100% sure that this company keeps up with the best, and you are confident that this company will grade your coins, at the same grade as a NGC or PCGS, then send them into DGS...
Then send them to crossover at on of the other companies, and please tell me how it goes..
I don't want to be proved wrong here, but if somebody can, I'll clap :)

    Tmoney,

You are treading on treacherous ground. We all understand your point which is that currently PCGS and NGC offer a much better resale value for a slabbed coin. What you need to recognize is that the TPG game is all about consumer confidence and reputation. It takes a long time to build that confidence and it can be destroyed quickly. Dominion has only been in business for a little over a year. That is not nearly long enough to evaluate the company's performance. Furthermore, the biggest problem that I see is that it is tough to be a Third Party Grader when you own a coin auction house (DLRC). However, my guess is that in order to take on a two headed monster like NGC & PCGS, any new TPG would need a base of customers to market their services to. Once they can convince the DLRC's base of loyal customers that their grading practices are sound, they can then start to aggressively advertise and expand.

As far as your little experiment, respectfully, you need to provide incentive. If I am being obtuse, let me make it clear. Nobody is simply going to try to prove you wrong so that you can applaud their efforts. Now a wager on the other hand is a different story. This venture is time consuming and costly and I wouldn't touch it for less than $1,000. I also wouldn't cross them, rather I would insist on cracking and re-submitting. Let me know if you would like to continue discussing the experiment.

As far as my opinion on DGS, I hate both the name Dominion and the fact that they have continued to use the PCI holder which I always hated. With regards to their grading, I think it is very good. Had the CAC not come along and forced the big two to tighten up a little, I think DGS might have actually been more conservative than both PCGS and NGC.
