It is just the fact that it is a key date, and the chinese have counterfeited everything, and we all have to be skeptical now

ice Just happy to be here

Yes I am very spectical of key dates that are raw coins there are lots and lots of fakes that I just assume some little old lady couldn't have but one back but I guess it does happen. Ice

The Chinese are opportunists and quick to make a buck. I sincerely doubt they know what a SLQ is. Morgan yes, Trade Dollar, Si. But SLQ? Not in their venacular....

It will be interesting to see how this turns out!

Thanks for clarifying NGC policy, 900fine. Looks like any of the big 3 can do the job. Larry Briggs at SEGS is a top authenticator, too, I understand.

I agree...it takes a lot of effort to produce a fake..why deal with an SLQ when there are much larger markets & opportunities for coins like the ones you listed in your post..

The Chinese are producing copies of virtually every US issued coin, including SLQ's, Barbers, CBH's, Bar Coppers, you name it.... Most of them are easy to spot, but if worn down and aged, they can fool people. They have been producing both common and scarce Morgans, in silver, for some time now, that have come close to fooling professional graders, as well as a lot of average collectors/dealers. The fake PCGS slabs continue to improve. ASSUME NOTHING when buying for your collection, my friends, especially where the keys are concerned.

I don't like it, but I can't put my finger on it....

For me I think it's the color that sends up the red flags, I have seen a lot of coins cast in lead or pot medal with this much detail... It's just that color, Ive seen it before... but that's just an educated guess

Color is what threw me off as well...
I'm just wondering what PCGS would say...

Get it slabbed after you check the weight and magnet.
All appearances is that it is authentic.
For a few bucks you got confirmation and off to Heritage

personally, I would wait for a major show and see if someone like Randy Campbell or another well-renowned grader can authenticate it for you for free.

I would hate to lose about $40 in grading, postage and insurance fees only to find out it is fake.

That's great news, and it made it into an NGC slab! Congratulations on a very rare find!

    Congrats!

And you can laugh at all of those who said: it's fake 'cause they don't come like that.
