this is a tough date, new to me sorry for the funky pics, it is a rotated reverse, a few degrees, common to the date. ngc ms-65 br.
Ahhh Arizona Jack, that is a real nice one.. You've got me drooling just like rickie b does when he shows his new purchases... lol
Absolutely, you NEVER find 1924-D's with this kind of strike, not to mention this amazing toning! Very very awesome! Right up my alley!
I don't own any Morgan Dollars and don't look at them that often. But, that is an exceptionally beautiful one. Wow.
Here are pics of my new problem child, but I still like her any way. The milky colored streaking and a few of the marks are in the plastic. I've set free all of the others that were in slabs, but I may leave this one, still undecided.
That 1877 is a real doozy for most of us! LOL Very nice, EF details, even though polished, it is a nice one, and will continue to go up in value.. Congrats
Congrats with the new old IHC, CW! Here's a coin I find extraordinary: This is a denarius from the late Roman Republic. It was struck in 56 BC. The moneyer was Faustus Cornelius Sulla, son of L. Cornelius Sulla, the bloody dictator reigning from 82/81 BC to 78 BC. (Read about sulla here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucius_Cornelius_Sulla#Dictatorship_and_Constitutional_Reforms ) The obverse pictures the diademed and draped bust of the godess Diana, sister of Apollo, goddess of the moon and protector of the young. The extraordinary part is this coins reverse. Its image is similar to the image on the signet ring of the dictator, and commemorates a specific event in his career, namely the betrayal of King Jugurtha of Numidia. The 3 pictured are Sulla himself, seated left between King Boccus of Mauretania who kneels before him, presenting an olive branch. Behind, right, sits Jugurtha with his hands bound. The wikipedia article mentions this story, even with a picture of a coin similar to mine: Capture of Jugurtha "In 107 BC, Sulla was nominated quaestor to Gaius Marius, who had been elected consul for that year. Marius was taking control of the Roman army in the war against King Jugurtha of Numidia in northern Africa The Jugurthine War had started in 112 BC, but Roman legions under Quintus Caecilius Metellus had been unsuccessful. Gaius Marius, a lieutenant of Metellus, saw an opportunity to usurp his commander and fed rumors of incompetence and delay to the publicani (tax gatherers) in the region. These machinations caused calls for Metellus's removal; despite delaying tactics by Metellus, Marius returned to Rome to stand for the consulship and took over the campaign. Sulla Capturing Jugurtha Under Marius, the Roman forces followed a very similar plan as under Metellus and ultimately defeated the Numidians in 106 BC, thanks in large part to Sulla's initiative in capturing the Numidian king. He had persuaded King Bocchus of Mauretania, a nearby kingdom, to betray Jugurtha, who had fled to Mauretania for refuge. It was a dangerous operation from the first, with King Bocchus weighing up the advantages of handing Jugurtha over to Sulla or Sulla over to Jugurtha.[5] The publicity attracted by this feat boosted Sulla's political career. Much to the annoyance of Marius, a gilded equestrian statue of Sulla donated by King Bocchus was erected in the Forum to commemorate his accomplishment."
AJ- 24 D is outrageous. I like the 1877 also- polished or not. I just bought some coins from AJ and can't wait to get-1949 P MS 66 and 1956 P MS 66 both RD.
Thanks T$, I picked up about 3/4 of a complete Indian head set at the original auction, most looking very similar to the '77, so it has been reunited with many of its compadres. I got this from a one item auction that was attended by 4 invited bidders. For half of Redbook I think I did OK. Thanks to you also svessien, and nice Roman coin you have, and thanks for the reading material. I learned more than usual today.
Hey CW, thanks. And thanks for taking the time to read it The coin arrived yesterday, and was the kick I needed in order to pick up my camera and try to do some numismatography for the first time in months. Are you far from a complete IHC collection? (I'm not talking R9 varieties here...)
I just went through this entire thread again. Some really great coins shown. The first '77 IHC I'm suprised it didn't squeak into a MS-60 considering it is a '77. The second '77 shown, one thats polished, that it also a beautiful coin. I need a '77.
Well I went ahead and looked through this again as well... Very beautiful coins we've all bought.. LOL Can't wait to see more...
