Each and everyone of those are in violation of Ebay's policy on selling counterfeits, since they require them to be stamped COPY. :goof: But here's one more:

It's amazing how much Ebay is responsible for assisting the Chinese Counterfeiters in destroying our hobby. :(

Is it really destroying the hobby, or merely weeding out those not bright enough to do five minutes of research before blowing that kind of cash on a coin? People willing to part with money in this way are gamblers, not coin collectors, and don't deserve to be among the ranks of those who take the time to study before buying. I don't approve of these type of auctions, naturally, but they do serve the purpose of separating the collectors from the morons.

I don't think the old caveat emptor position really works in today's marketplace. Sellers can avoid and evade policing and the law just too easily. Plus, modern technology enables a much wider reach or audience for junk such as this. I also know many companies simply stiff people, with the expectation that the person won't be able to afford protecting his rights. . . some do this customer abuse as a part of their routine business.

This is economic terrorism. The folks bidding on those coins will doctor them to make them look alot more authentic than they do now. And they are making them by the truckloads. Sure you can tell it's fake if it's from China, there's no feedback, ect ect. Personally I'd never buy a 1909-s VDB from ANYONE on ebay, slab or no. I like my local guys and they treat me good. You form a relationship, and you can learn who you can trust. Ebay is shooting itself in the foot letting this go on.

I submitted complaints to the FTC for the hell of it, about the non-genuine ones that don't meet the law requirements. eBay wont do crap about it because they profit off of the listings, paypal, etc.

Edit: It appears eBay took the auctions that were live, down.

I probably saved somebody some money somewhere down the road.

I posted these on CFE first and then I posted the one and when you posted the two auctions, I already had everything in a neat bundle to post. That's why it didn't take me long to toss in all the current and past auctions and with everyone on CFE and ones here on CT knowing about these, I figure Ebay was inundated with reports and with the blatant policy violation in the title itself, Ebay will react. ;)

Now if we can just get Ebay to react that fast with the counterfeit sellers out of China? :goof:

    Ribbit :)

Ps: Here are some completed auctions of 1909-S VDB counterfeits sold as authentic (last one was sold as a copy):

    http://cgi.ebay.com/1909-S-VDB-Lincoln-Wheat-Back-Cent-Excellent-Details_W0QQitemZ220407882943

    http://cgi.ebay.com/1909-S-VDB-LINCOLN-CENT-PLEASE-READ-BEFORE-BIDDING_W0QQitemZ290313432298

And here are two I suspect aren't authentic but it will take an expert to figure out:

The counterfeiting thing, the China thing, has kept me from buying certain coins. So it IS a damper on the hobby. I'm amazed the federal government doesn't do something. Its counterfeit money.

It sure is counterfeit, and I can't imagine ebay not being charged with conspiracy to distribute counterfeits in the U.S.

Though I'll not ever bid on items like these, if I were to receive one as a buyer, I'd call the FBI, immediately. But if seller is in China, nothing can be done to the seller, but there is always ebay. Actually, one injunction might result in ebay having to shut down, at least temporarily.

That might get their attention. : )

ebay should have a zero-tolerance policy toward counterfeit U.S. coinage and currency. One fake discovered and seller should be banned for life, or maybe only twenty years or so.

    I agree with you Larry
This is a blatant disregard on Ebays part.

I am almost to the point of non caring. If somebody buys such an obvious fake, shame on them. There are books available as well as a virtual tsunami of information online. The sad part of this, is that many of these buyers will resell after some recoloring and doctoring to another unwitting buyer at an even higher price.

Last fall, a bulk lot ( 100 ) of 09-S-VDB copies ( none marked as copies )was sold on the bay for around $300.......do you venture to guess if that was a profitable investment?

How do you tell if it is a fake?

I know enough not to buy on ebay from China, but other than that, how do you know?

    Just trying to learn....

The mintmark shape is the most obvious giveaway, there are many others. Google " 09SVDB mintmark ", you will find clues there I suspect. If not, send me a pm and I will email you some better info.
