At the time of this posting, there is a single roll of William Henry Harrison, P-mint, Mint-wrapped-and-boxed Prez Dollars on eBay going for $350.00! There are 26 bids on this so far!!! Let me catch my breath............ Is this for real or did I enter an episode of the Twilight Zone? Come on... $350.00????? I realize that these dollars are the lowest mintage so far in the Prez series and the Mint is sold out of the Mint-wrapped rolls, but it shocks me that someone out there would actually pay that kind of money for these things. Well, let me take that back... I've been shocked in the past seeing what people will pay for something, so maybe I'm not so much "shocked" as "dismayed". But, really........ $350.00...!!!!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/2009-P-William-...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50
I wonder if it is the same people that were paying those hudge astronomical sums for the first Lincoln Cent rolls. If only I could find '09 dime and nickel rolls. What is going on is going on, but does anyone think this might increase overall interest in the series?
I got one from my bank and sold it on e-bay for 33 + 4 shipping. Not a bad little profit. But I really wish I had the mint wrap ones as $350 is just insane!
That's kind of what I was thinking... but, even if that's the case on this particular auction, there are other auctions where the price is astronomical... So, I just don't know...
I have some of these. They were plentiful around here. Are they really worth more than face? I bet I can get all I want. 0CD
Nope, no shills, for real -- and how do I know...? A story to tell: As related in other threads, I discovered that the US Mint has two shops here in DC (well, a lobby shop at their main building and a kiosk at Union Station). So, I went to see what they had -- and they had mostly the same stuff that you can get online. But I also noticed they had Harrison rolls, and that the Harrison rolls were listed as sold out at the web site. So, that night, I went home, and saw the prices Harrison rolls were getting on eBay (at that point, around $80). I went right back to the shops, got 10 rolls (5 each of P and D), and flipped them all on eBay. The 2009-D rolls went for $70 to $90 each, the 2009-P rolls went for $120-$190 each. (Note: I went back a few days later -- and they had sold out at the shops). So -- three questions/observations: 1. Why are P's going for so much more than D's (very consistently so), when the P's are more rare? 2. Why would anyone pay as much as they did for my rolls? 3. Why is the price still skyrocketing? (I wanted to sell mine quickly, because I thought that saner minds would prevail and the prices would come back down -- like they have for 2009 cents, like they did for 1950-D nickels, and seemingly everything in between. I still do think the price will come down, but, obviously, not yet!) And, no, I'm not kicking myself at all for selling too soon and not making more of a killing than I did. I'm lucky and happy, not greedy. So . . . I can tell from personal experience, these aren't shills. These are folks desperate to get their hands on mint rolls. As I've noted before -- putting the words "sold out" and "rare" together in an ad, and people go nuts. This is, by far, the lowest mintage Pres $1 coin thus far. (Hey, for all I know, the guys that got them from me for $120 are flipipng them! More power to them! ) Pretty crazy, eh?
THe answer to question one was answered by you. The answers to questions 2 and 3, you need to refer back to your question one for the answer. Good job on the flipping!
Argghh . . . I asked it wrong! Let me start over: The P's (when I sold them) were selling at almost twice the price of D's. And here are mint figures for the WH Harrison dollars: P: 55,160,000 D: 43,260,000 OK -- and here's another question: Why are WH Harrisons (which have been around for 2-1/2 months) already sold out at the Mint (and they never offered them on direct ship); yet the Van Buren dollars (just slightly higher mintage than Harrison) -- which are being sold via direct ship, and which have been around for 6 months -- not sold out? I totally don't get this . . .
Bank rolls have no real premium but mint wrapped rolls are flying high. Weird how people are not paying for the coins but the wrappers.
I do not find that weird at all. After all, many people have been trained for decades now not to pay for the coin, but for the plastic...why not paper too then?
This is absolutley freakin' insane.... http://cgi.ebay.com/2009-P-William-...yZ166677QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
We are in May so we have quite a bit of '09 remaining. To me this has been one strange year at the mint. Not doing these anymore, these on hold until further notice, shipping problems, quit making these for the remainder of the year, and them wacky prices for some of the items coming out this year. I've never seen a year like this before.
