I know that PCGS only requires the bottom set of lines and NGC requires both sets, but do PCGS certified FBL coins sell for less than NGC FBLs or no? Can anyone give me a numismedia value for a 1950 MS64 FBL? I know that PCGS price guide says $95, but it is usually a tad high.

    Thanks.

PCGS FBL's sell for more than NGC examples, on average.

As for the real value of a 50-d FBL, I would check Teletrade or eBay archives as they will give you the best gauge on how much you can really get on the open market. Expect, however, that the market to dealers is at a much lower level (typically greysheet minus 10% or more).

p.s. I would guess the value at roughly $50.

I thought NGC was tougher on special designations. That would make me think they would sell for more?!?

They are and they should, but they don't always. That is because there is a pervasive perception within the coin market that PCGS is tougher on grading than NGC is.

The truth of the matter is simple - on some series PCGS is tougher on grading. On other series NGC is tougher on grading. But note that I am speaking of grading in general. With special designations NGC has tougher criteria in every case. Most people don't even realize that NGC has tougher requirements and that doesn't help. But the gap in realized prices between NGC and PCGS slabbed coins has narrowed greatly in recent years and in some cases the gap has even reversed.

Bottom line - realized sales prices do not always indicate best value. And the brand name on the slab does not always indicate a better coin for the grade. You, as the buyer, have to know how to determine that for yourself.

Good catch on my P/D typo, but my value assessment remains unchanged.

I agree with GD as well. In a previous discussion regarding a 1950 D Franklin Half , I poorly stated. I am suggesting the advantage there, was obtaining a grade of MS 66 by NGC as opposed to a 65FBL by PCGS . Sorry for the poor attempt to convey this opinion in the previous Post GD. I must have accidently done two doses of meds that night.

While were at it, please check out this CT thread and see if the coin is worthy to send in to PCGS or NGC for a MS FBL designation.

But why would you send it to NGC as opposed to PCGS ?

Its harder to get FBL at PCGS that why I would send to NGC
