Admittedly, I am no expert when it comes to coins, but I have almost no knowledge when it comes to paper money. In the collected wisdom (and hopefully the collected wit as well.... ;)) of Coin Talk, what are some of the better resources out there for starting to learn a bit?

    Thanks Byrd....

I have thumbed through it.... glad to see an endorsement for it. Seemed like it was fairly (OK, REALLY) full of info.

Comprehensive Catalog of US Paper Money 7th edition Gene Hessler and Carlson Chambliss is great!

One of the Best Books on Paper Money out there is the Comprehensive Catalog of U.S. Paper Money By; Gene Hessler and Carlson Chambliss.

For information, it is very good...for pricing it is like most otther printed material. Prices cahnge sometimes on a daily basis, so do not look at it for price info.

I'll second (or is it third) that recommendation. imho, it's one of the best books out there. Can be a bit hard to find as it's not typically one you'll find at book stores. I found a copy on eBay. If you look there, make sure you're getting the 7th edition and pick it up in hardcover as it looks so much better on the bookshelf! ;)

In the meantime, here's a couple good sites and an online 'pdf' book with some interesting info....

If your interests go beyond US notes, you might also pick up Krause's Standard Catalog of World Paper Money (SCWPM) as well. It's sort of the definitive general-purpose catalog.

thanks dave, I am still not really at the point of being able to pick an interest just yet. I have a few bills (a couple of $2, a $1 Silver cert., and a few foreign bills) but I just don't know enough yet to really even know what I am interested in....

I hear ya mate. I rarely get the feeling i know enough to know what i dont know.

Take your time in figuring out what you want to collect. Do feel pressured to collect anything. If you dont like.. or even more so, love what you collect, you wont collect it for long.

no pressure :) just play around with different things. Dont trap yourself into paper, dont get too narrow with just silver certs.... get a few of different designs, maybe both US and world, as well as both coins and currency. Eventually, you will start looking mroe towards 1 type.... let you guide you :)

I think there was a thread here a while back where folks were telling what their first banknote was, or what got them going on the hobby. Might be interesting reading.

I agree with "don't jump into it too fast" - especially "don't go spending a lot of money before you really know what you're collecting." It's very easy to get sucked into buying a whole bunch of cheap notes just because they're pretty, only to find out later that your collecting interests went a different direction. In my case, French banknotes, and France in general, has a whole lot of meaning to me, and has for my whole life. I see more in French banknotes because of my own experiences, and that's why I collect them.

I'm sure after you look around a bit, you'll find your muse.
