Shouldn't there be 3 Kennedy Half spots? 1 90%, 1 40%, 1 clad? It looks like there's only Silver (1964) and then Clad (1965-present), which seems incorrect, considering all the other varieties they have there. also, I thought there was a spot for a commemorative half?
That's how mine is...it seems odd and I have always wondered why there isn't a 1965-70 40% slot and a 1971-Date Clad spot but their isn't. There is also a Bicentennial slot with the other Bicentennial coins later in the album though.
yeah, I plan on buying a 7070, and when I saw that there was no spot for that I thought "what am I supposed to put in the 1965-present spot, there are two* many choices!" is that a separate page? The pictures I saw didn't have that. edit: nevermind, I see it *pun intended
Mine is the same. But, there are a lot of coins and types not represented in the 7070 album. I doubt even half of the type coins are listed, but that sure makes it easy for us without a few million dollars to spend to put a set together. Guy~
I never noticed that before. That is weird. Thats kinda why I'm doing my own custom type set without the album.
Type sets can be defined a thousand different ways. It's probably the most unique set to put together because each collector has their own definition of what belongs in one.
I based my type set on the one in the NGC Registry. Then I modified it slightly to add one coin that I thought belonged (even though when asked, NGC said "no"). I don't know what a PCGS Registry type set looks like. I'm not even sure I CAN look since I'm not a member. As popular as the Dansco 7070 is, I prefer not to have my coins in an album like that. Since some of those coins get a bit expensive, all my type coins are slabbed. And I suspect that the Dansco album is controlled by silver coins in spite of the "to present" label on the newest coins. Why do I think that? If it were a true type set, such things as the state quarters, westward nickels, etc. would be included. I don't think it even includes the Bicentennial designs. Again, as others have said, a type set is a personal thing. You define it as you wish.
The Dansco 7070 does include the bicentennial coins. The PCGS full type set has pretty much every coin to 1964 (not sure why they stopped there) There are 137 coins required. It is almost impossible to complete (only one person has).
Mine has a slot for a state quarter...granted it's only one slot and not the whole series, but there is a slot in there. It also has slots for each bicentennial coin. Mine does not have the Westward nickels but I bought mine before those came out so I don't know if the new one has them or not.
Just did a check on the NGC Registry Type Set (1792-1964). The count is 97 coins. I didn't look at the "to present" type set so I don't know how many more coins are included. BTW, I have 76 of the 97 coins and am currently ranked 17. :smile And I still contend there should be another type included, but that's like beating a dead horse at NGC.
I am considering an album for my type set and have been shopping around (there are some posts already on this that I have participated in) It seems the Dansco 7070 is the most prevalent - and pretty complete as far as 19th and 20th centuries. It is missing the westward journey and the new cents - but those came out in the 21st century, so should not be included - the sate quarters are (1 slot) as it started last century. I think Dansco is working on an update that would include the newer nickels and cents to and get current. The Intercept Shield album has about the same choices, but is current with the westward journey and cents up to 2010 - just one slot for state quarter. Decisions, decisions...
Well, I just purchased the 7070 album... In a few days it should get here, and I can begin! I think I'll make a poll at that time, of what I should put in the 1965-Current Kennedy Slot, an SMS 40% or a Proof Clad. I look forward to you answers when I get the poll up
I'll start answering now. Put in what you want. IMO go for high grade rather than silver vs. clad. If you have two you feel are equal, use the silver one. OR To really snaz up your type set buy a '64 proof set and use those coins. COST = about $20 for 5 eye-catching coins.
I have a nice 1964 Proof for the 1964 Slot. But for the 1965-Present slot, I was considering a 40% Silver or a Regular. However, I realized that they have 1968 Proof Sets. So I think I'll go with that.
A nice challenge (and expensive one at that) would be to fill a dansco with all proofs (even the old ones!)
umm, do they make proofs of the draped bust/classic head cents? This would seem to be an impossible task.
For me, I think of type sets as an example of each American coin. So, I typically like to use business strikes because I like those examples to be uniform and all be what would have circulated. I have never felt that proofs fit in a type set. But, a type set is among the most individual sets one can make so I'd put in whatever you like. Here is what I did. In my 7070, I don't have any proofs. But, for the 1965-Present slot I put a BU clad. The reason was, I already have a silver BU in the 1964 slot. There really isn't any visual difference between a 90% or a 40% Kennedy...both look silver. But, the clad coin is a different color. Since I wanted my type set to have an example of each major US design, I felt a clad example would better reflect the changes in the coin.
