Here are some photos of a coin I found metal detecting this morning. These are the "before cleaning" photos. What do you think it is? I will post some photos of what the coin looks like after cleanup later tonight when people have had a chance to guess.

    Here's a hint: It is a U.S. coin.

I would say cool find, but I can't be sure that it's really that cool. I assume it must be the way you are building it up.

It would help if there was another object in the picture to get a gauge as to what its size is.

I am guessing matron Head large cent. If i really use my imagination there is the outline of the head on one side, and a ghost of a wreath on the other.

I just hate it when they come out of the ground like that!

A big copper blob. I am going to guess there will be little left of the coin after all the crub is removed. Ice

Well here it is. Most of you were so optimistic in your guesses! I only wish I could have found a colonial copper or a two cent piece....

The reality is much more humble. I found a 1936 nickel. When I dug it up I had no idea what it was except that it was the right size to be a nickel. Only after cleaning was I able to finally made an identification.

If anybody else on here metal detects you would know that finding nickels through all the junk out there like pull tabs and foil wrappers is a bit more challenging than finding other coins. In my three or four years of detecting I have found only a handful of nickels and this is the first buffalo.

I found this coin in a park that opened in about 1937. This could have been one of the first coins lost there! Notice how the corrosion is pitting the surface of the coin after 60-70 years in the ground.

I've been detecting for some time, and that is a very nice Buff!

And, I admit it, I never would have guessed a Buff nickel.
