    Pennies and Nickels

Got my first ever box of pennies yesterday...been through only 9 rolls so far and found 3 wheats! (The oldest being a little worn out 1920P) I'm getting optimistic about this box...will post again if I find something interesting.

By the way, a question to all you nickel searchers...what are the odds of finding something interesting? I got 10 rolls yesterday and looked through all of them...only found a few nickels from the 50's and 40's (oldest being 1946)...no war-time or anything else.

I average 1 war nickel per box. Check the rotation as well, especially on 1999.

Hey gang, I'm new to the forum so I thought I would just jump in and say hi. I've been a coin collector since 1969 and an avid roll searcher since 1996. I have a couple of boxes of Lincoln's I started working on but got side tracked with 20 rolls and a 5000ct bag of wheats I bought from a couple of private parties in town, and have been sorting thru them. Also my daughter is getting married next weekend so have been busy with that. When i get back to the rolls, I'll post anything that might be of interest. I love hearing about other people's finds. It's a great motivator for me, especially when you go thru those long dry spells. Hope everyone has a great week and good luck with all your hunts.

Just finished my first box of pennies...found 10 wheaties. No error coins....guess I'm ready to get another box in a couple of days

Just a curious question, how often is too often to ask a bank for a box of pennies?

If you are getting a lot of coins, I would suggest that you see if you can order what you want. I have to have my orders in before Thursday and then they come on the next Tuesday. Makes it easy if you are ordering boxes of them.

Spread it out among banks. I only go to one bank, but then I only get new coins every week or two.

Thanks for your tips guys. The issue here is that I have access to only 2 branches of my bank (one where I have an account)...so I need one to take coins from and the other to deposit the unwanted coins back. The other banks around here are not quite the friendly type.

The last time I got a box of pennies, I just asked the teller for the procedure of ordering one and he said I could have one right then and there was no need to order. I guess I'll take my chances around Wed....so that even if I need to order a box, I'll probably get one on Friday.

So I filled three holes last night in collections:

    Jeffersons: 1944-D, 1951-D

    Roosevelts: 1946

$50 bag of cents was already searched... not a single wheat.

interesting conversation with a bank teller

I went to my bank today to make a deposit. As usual, I asked if they had gotten any 2009 coinage in, and of course the answer was still no. Then I asked her if she had seen any on the "old large dollars" come in. She said no, BUT they had gotten some really old dollars in a couple of days ago. I asked, 'what's old to you?' (antique in 1980's on eBay)The teller said 1896. Well, I can tell you that I stood right at attention on that and inquired more about them. Apparently a lady came in a couple of days ago with 20 Morgans, mixed dates and just wanted to cash them in. The teller (not the one telling me the story) told the lady that she could get more for the coins from a coin dealer, but the lady said no, that's alright, I just want to cash them in. She did and the teller, Lisa quickly bought them from her drawer. I guess the moral of the story is that there is still interesting and valuable coinage circulating thru the banks. You just have to be in the right place at the right time.
    Just thought this was interesting.

nope. the teller bought them. I'm going to wait a couple of days then ask her to sell them to me. We'll see what happens.

By the time I was on the second to last roll of nickels out of $ 20, I had only found a 1941, not really much. But... then I found a 1950-D in EF condition. I have searched nickels for years, and never found one of those before.

The first pic is a wide A M. THE SECOND PIC IS A CLOSE am which almost every other year except 1990 seems to be.

I'm still yet to find one of those, but then I haven't been searching for much more than 6 months.
