This is a key date in the Rupee series of India. One of the two most desirable along with the 1897(C). As usual crappy images but you can see the coin!
well the 2 most desirable rupees for british india is the 1834 for william 4 and the 1840 for william 4 mumba but if ur looking for a imperial victoria rupee u want 1897 c and believe me the C is important there are a lot of so called keys but no one knows why they are keys many got burned with the key of 1911 when a huge lot was discovered. 1939 is a key for now so if they are discovered at a future date the price could well go down.
ah... thx for that spock..another instance where u (rightly) point out to the virtue of "patience".. one more thing, i always wondered what constitutes a "hoard"? like the ones shown on some of the US sites, saw something called NY subway hoard, fl hoard etc.. so when exactly does a collection becomes a hoard? are there any hoard finds in india.. maybe if i stack a few coin bags of 1 rupee coin from circulation say after 50 years they become the mumba hoard btw since u mentioned that discovery of "1911" coins.. wonder whats the story behind it.. PS: if u can plz put this in yur book, the key dates in india rupee series that would be fantastic..
hoard - some person for whatever reason has lots of coins - similar to hoarding then one day these coins suddenly appear on the market and the issue is no longer scarce. lot of collectors will tell u that the 2 mohurs coin is scarce but u get at least 5 opportunities to buy it every year so its not really scarce is it. yes the pig rupee is one and i am 99% sure that in ourlife time we will see one for george 6 also , the reason 1897 is scarce in unc is coz the mintage was low. yes i should put this whole para properly edited in the book.
Typical of spock1k, no story on the 1911.... well these were found in India..and dealers distributed it. No one dealer is willing to tell the source.. I will tell you of my experience with this hoard and the quality of coins tomorrow.
yeah you saw the whole hoard !!! maybe it came to you with the calcutta mint proof hidden in your backyard and what brilliant statements -indian coins found in india? genius did it take u 20 years to figure out that indian coins were made in india. some people think attacking someone else is a quick way to gain publicity they are going to get a rude awakening
i agree. you should read some of his other posts. everytime he gets found out with his coins he starts his antics and personal attacks
Just to clear the confusion....the 1834 is a pattern only date and the 1840 Williams IV is believed to be a restrike or a handiwork of an idle mint employee. Both are desirable but cannot count as key dates.
beliefs and facts are as different as chalk and cheese especially since every desire is not fulfilled and no one is going to say that those coins are less desirable than coins which have a mintage of several hundred thousand
I have dealt with coins from the original hoard...never claimed to have seen the whole lot. Many Indian coins have been minted in India in lot for foreign collectors (Yes, regular stuff --circulated coins not proof were minted from OLD dies) and shipped overseas. Some hoards were found after a decade or two outside of India. This hoard was found in India. I bought a quantity of coins (for a roll) from a dealer --1911, 1921 and some 1922. All the coins were BU-- were blast white and had the appearance of being dipped in an acidic solution while as blanks. The quality however was MS62 mostly and an occasional MS63. None in higher. I was disappointed, but for the price I got it was okay!
with all this sudden attention on indian coins, the prices may start going up , just like the indian mangoes, even they will soon be unaffordable! till now most of the "indian" content on this forum was on IndianheadCent
