Somehow, I'd like to own a Cheerios cent (& dollar) just because they're there. Just how common are these cents? I know there were supposed to have been 10 Million given out in the boxes but how many were spent? Bruce
I don't know what they're worth, but I just leaned over to take a look, and I've got three of them sitting on my desk, so it can't be a whole heck of a lot!
I'm sorry. That was a lazy answer. I see they're trading on eBay, in general, in the $5-$7 range. There is one (ahem, sorry) sucker (sorry again) who paid $27.87 (unless they saw something I didn't.) Also, there appears to be a "close AM" variety (that I didn't even know existed in the Cheerios cents), and one sold for $70 in an NGC holder. Hope that helps! Now I'm gonna have to go through my reference material and start looking for "close AM" on my cents!!!
I think that Cheerios just got a bunch of 2000 Philadelphia cents and put them in the boxes...so it's not surprising that some of them were the close AM type. I would pay any premium for a Cheerios close AM over what I would pay for a non-Cheerios close AM. Remember, the only thing special about the Cheerios Dollar was that some were pattern reverses, the cents were just plain ole cents.
So the thing is that in early 2000 the mint wanted to advertise the 2000 Saca $1 along with 10,000 2000P Pennies. The catch is that the Saca dollar is very valuable do to the designe on the reverse. The penny is not unless you were one of the lucky ones that was able to get the Wide AM. The only problem I see with that is that you have to open it up to see if you got the wide AM. Now there are 2 catches to that, 1 is you get lucky and get the wide AM or 2 you don’t have squat. Then there is more to that. If you do have the wide AM how do you get it verified so that you can get it graded as the Cheerios Wide AM if you don’t well then how do you get it graded as just the cheerios penny. So many questions and not enough answers lol.
