1. When a coin comes back in a BB do you pay for it? 2 what does the *stare stand for? Thanks for the help
Still have to pay for the BB. THey went through the time to look at it, so they charge the same. The * means it doesn't make it to the next grade, but has some qualaties that make it "better" than an average grade. I think.
You still have to pay if a coin is ungradeable. The NGC * (star) designation is for coins with exceptional eye appeal. This may be because they're at the top of their grade, but not quite good enough to make the next numerical grade, or it may also indicate superior eye appeal for some reason or another. Most commonly, I see this grade awarded for one-sided or light two-sided cameo contrast on proof coins (but not enough frost to make cameo), or on toned coins that are especially appealing.
People tend to get upset over having to pay for bodybags because they are under the mistaken that they are paying to have the coin graded. What you are actually paying for is to have a professional opiinionon the coin and have the coin returned in th appropriate holder. And that is exactly what a bodybag recipient gets. A professional opinion that the coin is defective in some way so that it does not qualify for grading, and it is returned in the appropriate holder, a bodybag. You got exactly what was contracted for, serviceds were rendered, and the payment earned.
Hasn't both PCGS and NCG discontinued "body bagging" and now will slab the coin as authentic if there is something wrong with it?
I thought NGC still BB'd coins but PCGS didn't. My understanding was if you wanted a genuine slab from NGC you had to go through NCS.
...........very true! happens all the time and both at NGC and PCGS services. also works with crack-outs too, although it is at times an expensive gamble.
