Presidential Dollar edge error?

Hey,
I just got some of the new William Henry Harrison Presidential Dollar coins. I noticed that some of the rim writing is one way, and on other coins, the edge lettering is the other way (like upside down). Are these errors or are the coin edge lettering not specifically on one side or the other?

Not an error Northguy......these coins are fed into the presses with no regard for the orientation of the edge lettering.

Yep, that's correct. There is a 50/50 chance that the writing will be in one direction verses the other. Now, I don't think this is the case with proofs however.

Just opened a bank roll of these Harrison's and see some interesting stuff on the edge.

I stopped unwrapping to take more photos. Anybody else seem stuff like these?

I remember when the GW dollar coins first came out and at the time and I had only seen 2 and both edge lettering were in the same direction. With this said, I arrived at work and noticed a co-worker looking thru a pile (15 or so) new GW dollar coins and he was all excited about how only 3 were struck opposite from the others. I also didn’t know that it was random at the time. I was excited some what myself.

 

Yes, the edge has E Pluribus Unum, Date and Mint mark, In God We Trust (I believe at some point they were going to move that back to the Obverse), and stars in between. It is pretty cool, but normal.

 

I think he may be talking about the stars, the 2007 and 2008 dollars didn't have them. When they removed the IGWT from the edge they had to replace it with something to prevent slippage of the edge die. So they replaced it with 13 stars.

 

Thanks Conder101....I knew they were going to do that at some point, but didn't know when. The 2009 Sacagawea also has stars on the edge.

I'm hoping to sell some stuff someday and replace the skin diving camera I'm using now with something better. But it's macro mode works well enough on a sunny day.

It's the "slippage" & stippling INSIDE the stars and lettering I first noticed.

Maybe I should take advantage of the current sunshine and try some more photos. I'm still to unwrap the rest of the roll but did pop off a couple from the top (with gloves) to peep inside. Better start a photo album to demonstrated how I destroy these gems.:computer:

 

Are those edge fingerprints, or a deeper stippling?

 

In the first picture I thought the "stipling" was just a fingerprint on the edge. On new edge dies there is a rough surface on the face of the die around the letters. It tends to come in different roughness patterns, isn't always visible, and eventually wears away as the die is used.

 

The Dok part comes from the old days where I had to scrub for surgery to work.

The "I wore gloves" part comes from when I busted the roll open when I 1st peeked inside.

The Mint part makes me know it came from the mint roll wrapper this way.

I'm here to be taught and I know what I did. What did THEY do?

I've heard they stomp these things through machines @ 10 per second! And given a chance to blink 10 times a second I'm sure I'd not be perfect in a minute or two.

Do they really run the presses at such rates?
