wouldn't the coin have toned if it was wrapped in tissue all of those years?

    I'd go with AU-55 to AU-58.

    Oh my!!!

I'm just starting to learn about the standing liberty quarters, and then to see this post - OMG, what a gorgeous coin - and the value it must have, eee-gods!!!

And wouldn't it be nice if all coin dealers were are honest and forthright as you in situations like this - may lots o' good karma come right back at ya!!

WOW, what a coin. I've only seen three of them personally, two fines and a VF. This shames those, I'd call it an AU-55 easily.

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

    Short answer: Not necessarily.

Longer answer: If a coin gets a protective "skin" before being placed in paper it will often NOT tone. Also, if the tissue had a low sulfur content it won't tone because of it.

I'm still thinking AU58 is on the low end.

Very nice coin indeed.... Did the man know it was rare or did you enlighten him?

I agree. I'm sure there are many out there who wouldn't have done that. Good for you. :thumb:

The customer came to me with "the book says this might be rare" my answer was like , it definitely is and we need to have it certified". First of all a coin like this definitely needs to be certified before it is sold. I showed it to some graders that i know and they all liked it. I got grades from 58 to 62. It is currently being walked through NGC at central states. I will know and be able to report a grade around noon friday.

As I stated LD, I would not be surprised if it comes back a 60/61 . A 62 would be a thrilling find , but I think it's short. Best of luck to the owner and you.

Question: Is there some doubling on the reverse letters (U) and (D) ?

thanks for letting us know. I was hoping it would have received a 60 for the owner. Terrific find , and as Paul Harvey use to do , please give us the whole story. Thanks LD

Can you give any details as to what prevented it going MS ?

yes i sure that's what it was man, but those details didn't look to worn in the pics provided. But an AU 58 is still a very very nice find.

The slightest rub on the high points.

The owner has decided to keep the coin in his collection! I'm really happy for him!
