How do you add coins to your collection?

Realistically, many US coins are cheap in proof state (I'm thinking Roosevelt dimes and Jefferson nickels and Lincoln cents). So how do you, you!, buy your coins: do you get a whole bunch all at once, or do you just buy a couple a year?

Although I collect toned morgans, I just buy whatever I see that i like. If I can find one person with several I will try to buy in bulk from them for a better deal.

I go in spurts. Sometimes I go a while without finding anything I like, and sometimes I buy a few coins a week for a month or two. There's no real planning that goes into it. I figure I have the rest of my life to accumulate and enjoy them.

Depends on what I find - I am always looking. Sometimes it is one coin and sometimes it is mutliple coins. It could be days between purchases or months.

I find many people buy in spurts.

If you have a local dear you like then they tend to come in once a week & buy a few here & there. Depending on their finances.

As for sales off the internet. I think people save up an amount they are willing to spend & order a ton of coins all at once. Sometimes the orders are 5 or 6 pages long.

It depends, it really does. I have gone months without making a single purchase, then there are times I make purchases over several successive days.

Yep -- I do that, in order to save on postage/handling.

OTOH, I've also purchased quite of number of really cheap items (hole-fillers) on ebay. (e.g., an occasional Merc for $1, incl postage).

I find that I usually make 3 to 4 purchases a year when I find something I like at a price I like.

Buy them as you can but also buy the book.

Buy them as you can but also buy the book. How can I emphasize that enough -
    buy the book
    buy the book
    buy the book
    buy the book
    buy the book
What book you may be asking - every book that helps you learn about coins that you like is what book
I buy about 100,000 coins each year but no coin I've ever had or found is more important than the knowledge I have gained form the books!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate my Numismatic Library. Tons of old Auction Catalogs , and many rare reference Books. The bottom line for me is, I learn through reading.
