Could you split the grade on these two coins? Ruben
LDHair, if you ever want to get rid of that beauty, please let me know. Here's my addition to the thread:
As we move away from the production of these coins I think nostalgia will build, followed by increased numismatic appreciation for them. They are very reflective of their time period. Ruben
I think they will be collected by more people in the coming years just because of their size. They are the last of the big dollars and because of their clad composition it makes them cheaper than the silver dollars as well as more unique. I think the design will always be considered "ugly" by many, but I think collecting interest will rise. Also in its favor is it's a very diverse set. You have clad circulation issues (and clad BU mint set only issues), silver BU and proofs, clad proofs, varieties, ect. It sort of has "everything" in the set.
In addition to that, the coins weren't strike very consistently and there are several major and minor varieties within the run and they are hard to find in good grades. That means that a spectrum of collectors, from big guns to the little guy can get into the game and become expert in a great many aspects of the coinage, which is the kind of intellectual stimulation that drives interest over time. Ruben
That is true. I'd imagine at some point there will be a "VAM" type study of these coins. I'd like to put together a nice set of them at some point. I'm not interested in minor die variates...but even with with the major varieties it is pretty diverse. What I'd look for would be the 3 1972 types and both 1976 types. Another great thing about this set is there are so many different definitions of a "complete set." I think the standard whitman folder has like 9 or 10 slots. In my eyes, a complete set is a bit larger than that...but my point is there are many different collection "goals" one could set with it.
All this talk about IKEs got me thinking about my collection, so I dug it out. I have about 10 IKEs that I have been wanting to send into PCGS for grading and attribution, but I was told that unless it is in the Cherrypickers guide, they won't even attribute it. I found a gorgeous 1973S MS with an incredible doubled die on the motto. Not even in the Cherrypickers guide. Dug through my Ike ref book and found it there. I am going to call them to see about this one. To pretty not to have it on the label.
Well aware of that, and I do have some DIVAs.... but I want them to say PCGS first. Man, I just became the cat that called the kettle black.
Sorry Larry, I haven't had a chance to photo all my MS IKES. All my proofs can be seen in my albums. Maybe some day I will get them up.
