Jello, as you mentioned this is a commemorative referring to the 100th anniversary of Peru's victory Beating off the Spanish Fleet in 1866, when they tried to retake the port city of El Callao and establish a foothold again in Latin America. This issue probably never actually circulated, or very little if at all. But it was issued in some quantity. It was meant as a commemorative only issue. My example is a proof.
:thumb: Last night this sold on dutch auctions for $1250.00!!! ***Why so high I do not know. but I have 18 more Bu in a roll that are not graded that will be for sure.:thumb:
I believe you were looking at the gold 50 soles version. Your coin in MS65 is worth around $50 tops. An NGC MS66 just sold for a bit over $60.
One of the better Peruvian commems, at least in as far as design is concerned. Here, the 50 Soles in gold, just over 2/3 troy ounce pure. Obviously NGC, though I don't recall the grade. MS65 or MS66 in any case. There is also a 100 Soles (1.35 troy ounce) but in my opinion, it isn't nearly as attractive as the smaller coins. The 100 Soles didn't strike up as well, and of the ones I've seen, they all have impairments.
$1250 would be a very good deal on the gold, less than $100 over melt. But in a Dutch auction?? They generally don't show-up very often for sale, the 1967 Peru 50 Soles struck on a double-eagle plancet is much more common, selling for around 15% - 25% over melt depending on condition. I would say the current retail on the 1966 Naval gold 50 Soles would be somewhere north of $1450 in MS65 or better.
$1250 plus buyer premium would be in the $1400 to $1450 range. That's a nice 50 soles you posted, by the way. =)
It been a year or more since I posted the coin below is why it sold so high ! plus I still have Ngc MS-67 Cameo $50 Sole Gold coin in the family set.It posted some were on Cointalk too.
