So far I've posted somewhat unknown coins. This one somebody should be familiar with. Luster is bright, despite the dark pictures. Question, are the sales on EBay, for example, realistic prices or wishful thinking. I am a nubie; i.e., the only book I have had is an old copy of a "red" book (A Guide Book of United States Coins). Isn't there somewhere on the Internet now where such a book's content is available? I have seen a few non-free sites, such as Greylist. I know coin ratings are important and I haven't had any of my coins rated professionally. But comparing to EBay pictures, mine makes their's look sick. Ball Park value?
Your coin looks to be genuine but circulated. It's hard to grade from photos but my guess would be VF-20 or 30. No higher. The value does not change much from grade to grade. Grey Sheet for this coin in VF-20 i= $615 and XF-40 = $620. Keep in mind that Grey Sheet is what a dealer may pay another dealer for a coin, not necessarily what he would pay you.
I do not believe this coin to be near VF20-30. I'd call it XF-45. There looks to be little actual wear on the eagle, talons, and stars which would typically be worn a lot more if it were of that grade (unless the system for grading gold is dramatically different). Possible weak strike in areas. Nonetheless, it looks dipped or altered somehow from the pictures.
Thanks Irespire. The coin is actually much brighter and yellower than in the photo -- bad photographer. It was actually on a piece of white paper that looks dark brown in photo. My bad.
There should be some mint luster given the lack of wear-- maybe that's why it was knocked down to VF by the other poster? At any rate, it looks like there is a nice die break that runs across the top of TEN D. and extends nearly to the A .
