is apmex a good place to buy rolls from, i seen they sell graded coins and was wondering if i got a roll from them would it be cherry picked or are they so big they dont need to do that and sell straght from monster box if you want a roll. thanks for replys
I know nothing about them, and have nothing to offer except this: just yesterday I read a post on CoinTalk, somewhere, of someone who purchased a lot of wheat cents (perhaps a 1000-coin bag, can't remember). It was supposed to be unsearched, but every single cent (except one?) was 1940's or 1950's, leading him to be very skeptical. But, please, don't take my word for it. Perhaps with "search" you can find that post.
APMEX is generally a well thought of and respected dealership dealing mostly in bullion. If you search for "APMEX", I am sure you will find numerous comments about them - mostly positive. As for buying "rolls", I cannot comment specifically, both because I do not know and because you did not specify what rolls you are referring to. However, I would be reasonably sure that THEY do not cherry pick them, but that is no guarantee that they have not been picked over.
I bought a bag of 5,000 wheats from APMEX, and have only found one pre-40's cent in about a 1,000 coins. And being a ratio type person, that means in 5,000 coins I will have a grand total of 5 pre-40's coins. But who knows, I could all of a sudden start pulling out 20s and 30s. I've dealt with APMEX on other products and have been happy with them.
I don't think you can draw much of a conclusion between unsearched wheats and rolls of gold bullion. Having said that, though, if your real goal is to cherry pick on condition, you will be better off doing it in person at a coin show, IMO.
source APMEX has to get the rolls from somewhere, and I think they would get them off the secondary market. The dealers giving them the rolls probably have already searched through them, otherwise, they wouldn't be sending them to APMEX! APMEX seems very reputable, especially for bullion products.
i will stick with my thought, that is if a co. sells graded coins i will not buy silver eagle mint tubes from them because the best has been send out for grading. just my thought.
I think you are right on that one in my opinion. As far as grading any coin I have always wanted to see with bullion ASE's what really determines a 69 vs 70. Also how long they spend on it looking to determine the grade. I have always had doubts about this determination made by TPG companys more than any other coin.
Last year I bought a 25 coin roll of Canadian Silver Maple Leafs when ASEs were very expensive. Locked in a decent price and sold some on Ebay and still have a half dozen or so. I thought they did good by me and would use them again. Bruce
